Staff numbers in corporate foundations are increasing slowly. This figure ranged from 1 to 26 employees per foundation in 2013. The overall number of staff positions in 2013 was 133, having grown from 111 in 2012.
The geographic reach of a corporate foundation is fully determined by the geographic presence of its corresponding parent enterprise. Equal numbers of foundations operate nationally and at the regional or local levels. Operating at the federal level is more typical for mass market corporations, which have wide regional coverage. The corporate foundations of mining and mineral processing enterprises, by contrast, usually operate in the regions of the company’s presence. International operations are very rare; only a few corporate foundations support international programmes, such as providing humanitarian help and supporting cultural programmes, within the regions of their overseas operations.
Corporate foundations do not have their distinctive image in the eyes of the public, tending to be lumped together with philanthropic foundations more than with CSR. Indeed, issues of philanthropy and CSR have gained much attention from mass media in the last few years due to intensive federal efforts to boost the third sector, volunteering and philanthropy. By 2012, the number of mass-media publications on philanthropy had more than doubled since the previous year (86,321 publications in 2012 vs. 30,756 publications in 2011; Ochareva 2016). Most of the messages were positive (58%), covering issues of help and how it was provided. Corporate foundations were mentioned in only 1% of publications, remaining stable during the whole examined period. Fundraising and private foundations gained the most attention in the mass media (13% and 19% of publications, respectively). Therefore, corporate foundations constitute a small but financially significant group among foundations and the non-profit sector in general.
