CHAPTER 10

“One macchiato coming right up.” Gert had come over to the table where Agnes and I had met so I could get my hands on the photos Al had Dottie look at.

In the meantime, the other Laundry Club Ladies had decided to take Dottie to see Christine Watson at the Cookie Crumble, which was located across the street from the Smelly Dog, on the second floor of the Tough Nickel.

I told them to wait there since we still needed to get some outfits for the undercover gig where I still wanted to see Jackie and get the information he wanted to tell me so it would free Terry.

Soft background music along with the baristas calling out orders caused Agnes and I to sit right next to each other so we could talk.

“Here are the photos.” Agnes’s saggy jowls jiggled. She put down the manilla envelope for me to pick up. “I’m not giving you these.” She patted around her soft gray hair. “If you’ll excuse me, I need to go fix my hair. The wind is ferocious today.”

I glanced out the window and looked across the street into the park, where there wasn’t a bit of wind, but it was Agnes’s way of letting me know that if Al found out she’d just left that envelope lying around it would be on me and not her.

Quickly I opened the envelope and took out the photos. There were only five. Immediately I recognized the man who had been in the Laundry Club doing his laundry and seemed awfully curious about what we did and didn’t know.

“How did he know who we were?” I questioned out loud about the sleuths the Laundry Club ladies and I had become.

“Here’s Agnes’s iced macchiato.” Gert had come up behind me. She set the drink down, and while looking at the photo, she slipped a straw out of the front pocket of her apron. “Who is that?”

Gert curled the small serving tray up underneath her armpit as she waited for my answer.

“Someone to work at the wedding. Hank’s and Mae’s.” Agnes responded as she took her seat. She must’ve heard Gert ask me.

“Really. Huh.” Gert shifted her weight. She looked over to a man sitting alone at a table, his back to us. “Are you sure, because that sure does look like the guy over there.”

“Don’t you tell a soul Mae has that or I’ll be fired.” Agnes got a little saucy, and I loved it.

“Spill it.” Gert walked over to the empty chair and sat across from us.

I tried to rubberneck around Gert to see the man.

“That makes me shiver because he was asking about Colt.” Gert moved her gaze over to the table where the man was sitting.

I was trying to collect my thoughts on how to approach him. Or should I call Al?

“Excuse me, Gert.” One of the baristas came over to our table. “The order for the Normal Baptist Church is ready. Do you want me to take it over to Preacher Elliott?”

“No.
