Judah peered several times at Locke on the short ride back to his house. Each time, he found Locke staring fervently at him, his lips pressed into a tight line. Locke’s grip on his coat never faltered.

He tried to figure out the best way to tell Locke the truth, and wondered what would happen if he said nothing. Would Locke ask outright? Would he needle him into telling? Or would he think he imagined the whole thing? Judah tossed the last one aside, with the way Locke held him tight, assuring himself Judah was still alive and kicking. Well, definitely kicking…

He pulled into the garage and waited until the garage door clanged shut before opening the car door. Judah didn’t get far, since Locke still refused to let go of him. He turned to look at Locke, arm outstretched where he held on to Judah, saw him nibbling on his lip.

“Come here.”

Locke scrambled to unbuckle himself, climbing over the center console and into Judah’s arms. He was like a monkey, wrapping his arms tightly around Judah’s neck, legs around his body, sinking his face into Judah’s collar. Judah simply slid his hands under Locke’s butt to hold him up, bumped the car door closed with his knee and carried him into the house.

He stopped in the kitchen and let Locke slide down his body, holding him until he was sure his other half stood firm. Locke peered up at him, cradling and studying his face, his eyes.

“I saw you…stabbed. There was blood, but then…then there was a light and you healed yourself. I saw that.” The breathlessness in Locke’s voice contained a soft, pleading note of urgency.

Judah nodded. “You saw that.”

“I can’t do that…humans can’t do that.”

“Humans cannot.” Judah agreed again.

Locke stepped back, letting his hands slip down from Judah’s face to his chest. He stuck his fingers into the hole the knife had made.

“Are you an alien?” Locke peered up at him.

Judah chuckled. “No. I’m one of God’s angels.”

“An angel?” Locke asked, and Judah nodded. Locke’s brows rose. “From Heaven?” Another nod. “Guardian?”

This time, Judah shrugged, a tiny smile forming at Locke’s stunted questions, the information overload turning off the speaking parts of his brain.

Judah flashed back to when he’d been raised to Heaven, pretty sure he’d done something similar to Locke. His brothers had had it easier as they’d been met by Judah personally upon ascension; they, at least, got a familiar face. It had been the same for all of them: shock, disbelief, elation—joy at being given another chance to serve Yahweh.

Locke placed his hands flat on Judah’s chest. Judah looked down at them, relaxed and therefore unprepared for the palms to start slapping him repeatedly.

“Guardian?” Locke yelled, piercing Judah with wide-eyed, swirling mists of gray. “What the fuck have you been doing? Because it certainly wasn’t helping me the last fucking nineteen years?”

Judah snagged Locke’s wrists and held them. Locke tried to pull away, but Judah tugged him closer. He wrapped his arms tightly around Locke and hugged him.
