Chapter 12
Bailey, New Hampshire, Tuesday, July 30, 2013
âWhy donât you two get a fuckinâ room?â
Masonâs quip jolted Eric from sleep. He found himself entangled in Lotteâs legs, one of her feet on his shoulder, resting against the side of his head. He felt her stir at the opposite end of the couch under the blanket they apparently shared.
She yawned. âWhat time is it?â
âFuck if I know,â Mason replied in a grumpy tone as he rounded the corner toward the kitchen. âI need coffee.â
Eric grabbed his phone from the coffee table: 8:20. Theyâd slept fairly late as clouds still darkened the sky, and a light but steady rain provided a soothing backdrop for sleep. He looked at Lotte, who shuffled on her elbows in an attempt to extricate herself from the knot they had somehow created.
She smiled. âMoin!â
âMoin yourself. Guess we fell asleep, huh?â
âLooks like we did. Best Iâve slept in days, once the storm cleared.â
Me too, though I also slept pretty well that first night you arrived.
âWhile heâs in the kitchen,â she whispered. âIâm going to sneak up and put on some clothes. Then you can get your things.â
He watched as she slipped off the couch and pranced up the stairs. He took a moment to absorb that enticing image, and then strode into the kitchen.
Mason stared at the coffee maker. âI need coffee before I can make fuckinâ coffee.â His voice was raw.
âJust sit down. Iâll do it. Iâm amazed youâre even up. We figured youâd be out until noon.â
Mason collapsed into one of the chairs at the kitchen table. âNah, Iâm cool. Get me some eggs and bacon and Iâll be good to go. Speaking of good to go, whatâs up with you and Lotte?â
âWhat do you mean?â
He laughed. âI mean whatâs up with you two sleeping together all of a sudden?â
âOh, the storm woke us both up.â
âThere was a storm?â
Eric snorted trying to contain his amusement. âYeah, man, big storm, lots of noise. You must have slept through it, which is probably why youâre among the living right now. Anyway, Lotte and I, we were talking, and I guess we just fell asleep.â
After a pause, Mason said, âShe likes you.â
âYeah, weâve been friends a long time, or at least we were friends a long time ago.â
He shook his head. âNo, thatâs not what I mean. I mean she likes you, likes you. She would never do something like that, sleep in some guyâs bed, even if it wasnât, like, a sex thing, unless she liked them.â
âSheâs always been a kind of âtouchyâ person. She usually seemed pretty casual about stuff like that to me.â
âWell, that wasnât my experience, even when we were together. Iâve never seen Lotte act like this around anyone but you. Of course, thatâs not a scientific examination of every relationship sheâs had, but Lotte doesnât fuck around, man. She doesnât do shit unless she has a reason. I donât know if sheâs what you want, but I think sheâd be into it if you were.
