Chapter 12

Bailey, New Hampshire, Tuesday, July 30, 2013

“Why don’t you two get a fuckin’ room?”

Mason’s quip jolted Eric from sleep. He found himself entangled in Lotte’s legs, one of her feet on his shoulder, resting against the side of his head. He felt her stir at the opposite end of the couch under the blanket they apparently shared.

She yawned. “What time is it?”

“Fuck if I know,” Mason replied in a grumpy tone as he rounded the corner toward the kitchen. “I need coffee.”

Eric grabbed his phone from the coffee table: 8:20. They’d slept fairly late as clouds still darkened the sky, and a light but steady rain provided a soothing backdrop for sleep. He looked at Lotte, who shuffled on her elbows in an attempt to extricate herself from the knot they had somehow created.

She smiled. “Moin!”

“Moin yourself. Guess we fell asleep, huh?”

“Looks like we did. Best I’ve slept in days, once the storm cleared.”

Me too, though I also slept pretty well that first night you arrived.

“While he’s in the kitchen,” she whispered. “I’m going to sneak up and put on some clothes. Then you can get your things.”

He watched as she slipped off the couch and pranced up the stairs. He took a moment to absorb that enticing image, and then strode into the kitchen.

Mason stared at the coffee maker. “I need coffee before I can make fuckin’ coffee.” His voice was raw.

“Just sit down. I’ll do it. I’m amazed you’re even up. We figured you’d be out until noon.”

Mason collapsed into one of the chairs at the kitchen table. “Nah, I’m cool. Get me some eggs and bacon and I’ll be good to go. Speaking of good to go, what’s up with you and Lotte?”

“What do you mean?”

He laughed. “I mean what’s up with you two sleeping together all of a sudden?”

“Oh, the storm woke us both up.”

“There was a storm?”

Eric snorted trying to contain his amusement. “Yeah, man, big storm, lots of noise. You must have slept through it, which is probably why you’re among the living right now. Anyway, Lotte and I, we were talking, and I guess we just fell asleep.”

After a pause, Mason said, “She likes you.”

“Yeah, we’ve been friends a long time, or at least we were friends a long time ago.”

He shook his head. “No, that’s not what I mean. I mean she likes you, likes you. She would never do something like that, sleep in some guy’s bed, even if it wasn’t, like, a sex thing, unless she liked them.”

“She’s always been a kind of ‘touchy’ person. She usually seemed pretty casual about stuff like that to me.”

“Well, that wasn’t my experience, even when we were together. I’ve never seen Lotte act like this around anyone but you. Of course, that’s not a scientific examination of every relationship she’s had, but Lotte doesn’t fuck around, man. She doesn’t do shit unless she has a reason. I don’t know if she’s what you want, but I think she’d be into it if you were.
