âWhat do you think, Horatio?â Hamlet asked once they were alone.
âSheâs hard to read,â Horatio said. âShe doesnât show her feelings like you do.â
âEven so,â Hamlet said.
âEven so, she did look⦠well,â Horatio paused. âIf she were human, Iâd say she looked startled. But sinceâs sheâs an androidâ¦â
âYes,â Hamlet prodded.
âI think she looked afraid.â
Hamlet clapped his hands together once and grinned. âExactly my thoughts. Iâm convinced that backup was a true record of Hamletâs last moments, and that Claudia is guilty.â
âYes, but what now?â Horatio asked. âItâs not enough proof to take to the board, and what would they do anyway? Thereâsâ¦â He looked away, unable to meet Hamletâs eyes. âThereâs not much legal precedent here.â
âI know what youâre too kind to say, Horatio,â Hamlet said. âThis isnât something for the law. It sees what happened to old Hamlet as⦠what? Destruction of property? But, to me, itâs murder. So Iâll just have to deal with it myself.â
Horatio opened his mouth to say something, but Rose Krantz and Gilda Stern returned to the atrium, still collecting gaming equipment.
âCan I have a word, Hamlet?â Gilda said, dumping an armload of headsets and controllers into Roseâs already full arms.
âWhich one?â he answered.
âAbout your⦠uhâ¦?â she looked beseechingly toward Rose for help, but Krantz was fully occupied juggling the gaming equipment. âBoss?â
âThatâs at least three words,â Hamlet said coldly, examining the tips of his fingers as if contemplating his non-existent manicure.
âWhy are you being so difficult about Claudia?â Gilda blurted.
âThereâs nothing difficult about me. Iâm easy. Easy like Sunday morning,â he sang.
âPlease,â she said, obviously flustered, âcanât you give me a straight answer to anything?â
âNow, Gilda,â Hamlet said, smiling and looking toward Horatio, who was leaving the room, âhave you ever known me to be even the slightest bit straight?â
Gilda took a breath and tried again. âHamlet, can you go see Gertrude in her office?â
âI am able to perform that task.â Gilda sighed and turned away as Hamlet grinned at her back.
Rose finally dumped her armload of devices on a plush chair and joined them. âShe asked us to tell you to see her, okay? Can you just do that one thing?â
âFine,â Hamlet said. âAre you done?â
Rose and Gilda glanced at each other, hurt and confusion on their faces.
âWhy are you being like this?â Rose asked, her voice quiet.
âUnlike you, I have an excuse,â Hamlet said. âI was made this way.â He picked up a pair of game controllers and thrust them into the hands of the two researchers. âLetâs play a game!â He closed his eyes and holoscreens sprung out of the tops of the controllers. The start screen to a complex racing simulator appeared, then countdowns began.
âHow do you play this?â Gilda asked, her fingers twitching on the unfamiliar controls.
âItâs easy,â Hamlet said. âYou just drive.â
âWhich button is the accelerator?â She hit the controls randomly, her space shuttle sputtering on the start line while Hamletâs shot out in front. By the time sheâd figured out how to start her vehicle and mastered the steering mechanism, Hamlet had finished the race.
