Chapter Forty-Five

The rest of the week was less interesting than Ryan had hoped, much to his dismay. While there were indeed adventurers strong enough to step foot in his fourth floor and survive an encounter with his Bone Enforcers, only one other group did so all week. They had only taken on a single Bone Enforcer, Badgy the Badgerman, before they headed back to the surface. That being said, there was apparently a good reason for their hesitation. There had been an assassination attempt on a Diamond 3 individual known as the Duke of Blood, whom Ryan recognized as the father of Blaine Dragnov. In other words, Emily and Matt’s cold-blooded father.

Ryan was torn on the situation. On one hand, he didn’t like Blaine. The Platinum 1 Blade Dancer was Matt and Emily’s brother and had made no efforts to hide the fact he wanted Matt dead. From what Ryan had picked up from Blake, the Duke of Blood had tried to have Matt assassinated multiple times. Tried really not being the proper term. Matt had been assassinated in the dungeon town, right in front of Blake. Of course, Blake had brought him back with some secret power available to him due to his Specter of Balance class. Still, the fact was, Duke of Blood and Blaine Dragnov? Bad.

Yet, a part of Ryan respected Blaine, and he owed the man a small amount of gratitude. Blaine had come to his aid, or maybe more appropriately, the town’s aid, during the demon attack. The Blade Dancer had taken down a Platinum Tier boss mob known as a Light Ender, turning the tide of the battle and giving Ryan a much-needed reprieve, which arguably helped Ryan defeat the chaos cultists attacking his dungeon from the inside.

Either way, Blaine’s actions didn’t’ change the fact that the Duke of Blood was a bad guy. And honestly he didn’t care one way or the other if the man died. But that was Ryan’s point of view. From an adventurer’s standpoint, an assassination attempt made on arguably one of the strongest humans living in the world, was a big deal. Even bigger, the fact the attempt had been carried out by the head of the Assassins’ Guild. A Diamond 3 assassin known as Death’s Breath. The Death’s Breath had been slain in the attempt and the Duke of Blood was gravely wounded. In one night, two of the strongest humans alive had been nearly erased from the world.

As much as Ryan wanted everyone to keep on diving into his dungeon so he could keep growing stronger, the adventurers had different plans. The political ramifications of such an event were massive, and many of the royals had been called back home to gather more guards and protective forces. Additionally, a lot of the stronger adventurers suddenly found themselves flooded with requests to act as bodyguards. Many of these were extremely lucrative, and a lot safer than diving the dungeon.

Beyond that, the unease that this unheard-of event caused, meant adventurers were suddenly a lot more on edge.
