Six – Nothing for Pioneers

Andy Gill came shuffling into the room, looking as weary as a trail’s-end steer. He gave Buck Halliday a critical glance before he nodded to Charity Rowland and asked;

“You got a drink here, Miss Charity?”

In the process of adjusting her skirt and tucking in her blouse, Charity gave Halliday a questioning look. When he nodded, she went at once to a cabinet against the wall and produced a bottle and two glasses.

Gill collapsed into a chair and stretched out his legs.

“They all quit town, Buck,” he said. “’Cept Charlie Bunce, but he ain’t gonna worry nobody for some time.”

Charity still looked worried, and Halliday studied her soberly for a long moment before he said;

“It’s all right, Charity, at least for now. Just let me know exactly what Reb is after.”

“I’m not sure, Buck, and that’s the truth. As soon as he heard your name, he just seemed to change. Have you met him before? Have you ever had trouble with him?”

Halliday shook his head.

“I’ve seen him once, but we never locked horns.”

Gill poured himself a generous drink and spent some time dusting down his shirtfront. There was an ugly welt on the side of his jaw, but apart from that, he seemed as spry as ever.

“Then why, Buck?” Charity persisted. “There has to be some reason why Reb is acting this way. He’s always been wild, but never like this ...”

“Somethin’ must be worryin’ him,” Halliday shrugged. “You might have a better idea of what it is than I do. Think hard, Charity.”

The woman shook her head, and her long black hair rippled around her shoulders.

For just a second or two, Halliday wished that Andy Gill would lose himself. Then he put the thought from his mind and said;

“So what now?”

Charity shook her head again.

“I just don’t know anymore,” she said.

“Well then,” Halliday said grimly, “I guess I’ll just do what seems necessary.”

He looked down on the empty yard. Andy Gill had told him that the three men had hit the trail immediately after the fight. There was no telling where they had gone or how long they would be away. Some of this just didn’t seem to make sense.

“Where is Reb now?” Halliday asked Charity.

“I haven’t seen him this morning,” she said. “Maybe he’s gone to see his father.”

Halliday thought briefly about that, but then he said;

“I don’t think so. He had plenty of chances to do that before. You’d best get yourself ready now, Charity, so Andy Gill can take you out to see your father. It’s way past time for that, and the longer you wait, the harder it will get.”

Charity began to shake her head, but Andy Gill said;

“Miss Charity, I ain’t at all sure if Buck is handlin’ this thing right or not, but by hell, at least he’s tryin’. An’ there’s somethin’ you oughtta know. It was your pa that sent me into town to look after you. Just you. You’re the one he cares about, an’ what you’ve been doin’ has hurt him somethin’ awful.
