Chapter Twenty-One: Athos and the Moonkin

True to form, Torrent guided them through the city with the ease of a bird riding thermals on a summer day. Not that they would have gotten lost on the way to the conspicuous patch of untouched nature in the middle of the bustling city, but something was still making Athos uneasy.

For one reason or another, as they approached, the vendors stopped calling out their services, stopped trying to tempt the groups with forbidden, rare treasures, and some even began to actively avoid them by closing their shops.

Not a single vendor tried to sell them anything.

Not a single one so much as raised a token in their direction or spoke a word. Athos may have been nervous, but being in a city of merchants and vendors that ignored them unnerved Sally even more so.

After they passed the tenth merchant, the one she could hear from three blocks away until he went deadly silent, she couldn’t hold back her thoughts anymore. “What the Hell, Torrent? I thought you said they’d be trying to sell us things.”

He looked around at the collection of vendors lining the streets and nodded. A slight grin played on his lips as he relaxed and continued to walk. “I did, didn’t I?”

“Because no one here is brave enough to swindle my friends.” His steps carried a new pride as he spoke. He was Torrent Lase, and here, he was their champion.

Sally wore her surprise easily, but she smiled for her friend. He had really come into his own in the past few years.

If Athos’s expression was anything to go by, he was more surprised than Sally, but both seemed to come to terms with it rather quickly. He might have been Torrent, a friend and ally, but to them, to the people of this city, he was someone more. It wasn’t that far in the leaps of logic. 36 had pointed out he was an honor guard, and that probably meant something important. Here, he was someone that was well known. Someone to be respected. Someone who carried a proper weight around his hip in the form of a sword and had the respect he needed to never use it.

As all of it processed, Athos’s apprehension at the idea of an empowered Torrent seemed to fade away. Time changed everyone. “I’m okay with that.”

“Something might be wrong with me, but strangely, so am I,” Sally relented. Torrent grinned a toothy grin as his chest puffed up a bit. Noticing his swelling
