Chapter 20

I set aside thoughts of my conversation with Tam and turned them to Avril instead. Where had I seen that girl before? Her image still haunted me.

I went back to her social media page and scrolled through her photos and information again. There were plenty of pictures of her smiling with her friends with a school building in the background. A few of her sitting on her couch making goofy faces. The obligatory pictures taken in the bathroom mirror to showcase an outfit or new lipstick.

But I still had nothing to help me identify why she seemed familiar. Social work? Church? Youth center? There were so many possibilities.

“Where did our paths cross?” I muttered, staring at the picture.

Wait . . .

I sat up straight and navigated to a different page on my web browser. I sucked in a deep breath at what I saw.

Was this it? The link I’d been searching for? My gut said yes.

I scrolled through several pictures and, just to be certain, I paused. Using my mouse, I enlarged one of the photos and stared at it, allowing myself time to process.

There she was. Avril.

She sat in a chair and smiled as her peers looked at her with rapt attention. Her hands were raised, like she was telling an engaging story.

The photos were from a juvenile diabetes support group I’d attended twice with Sarah. Avril hadn’t been there in person. No, she’d been missing by the time Sarah joined.

But I’d looked on this site, and I’d seen these promotional pictures before taking Sarah to attend for the first time.

Did Avril also have diabetes? And, if so, what did all of this mean?
