“The boat’s back.”

Kafir’s gaze lifted, his eyes meeting the druid’s. “Gypsy’s here? I checked yesterday and there was no sign of her.”

“She’s there now and there are signs of someone being on board. Your bunk was slept in and there were tea makings in the galley.”

“Why are you so interested?”

“I told you already that Gertrude will be an invaluable asset.”

“No. What you said was that we should be together.”

“And that’s true too.”

“Do you really think she’s here?”

“Why don’t you make a trip to the boat and see if anything stands out—possibly her perfume or maybe she left something behind that you might recognize.”

Kafir stood. “I’ll go, but if she‘s here, why haven’t we seen her?”

“Who knows? The city is enormous and anything could have happened.”

Kafir felt a quickening in his chest. “I hope she’s all right.”

“First you must discover if she arrived,” the druid said dryly, giving him a shove toward the tunnel. “And when you get back, we need to do the ceremony you asked for last night.”

Kafir turned. “I don’t need it anymore.”

“As soon as you see Ella again, you’ll need it. She’s wormed her way deeply into your psyche.”
