âTry it now.â
Charleigh pops her head back into the driverâs side and twists the ignition. The engine clicks for a second but then starts up. She squeals with delight, hopping back out of the car, running around to the frontâstill squealingâand wrapping me up in a hug.
âThankyouthankyouthankyou!â
I cup the back of her head, feeling her soft hair as she nuzzles my shoulder. She smells so good. The moment only lasts for a short time. She pulls away and then dusts herself off as she clears her throat. I remove all the cables and then shut the hood. Hopefully, the charge lasts for more than a week this time.
Before I have the chance to stop Charleigh, she hops back inside the car and turns it off. I cringe, closing my eyes as I bite down on my lip.
âWhatâs wrong?â
âWeâre more than likely going to have to jump it again.â
âWait, what?â
âUsually, you need to keep the engine running for at least fifteen minutes or else the charge wonât hold.â
Charleigh hops back into the car and lets out a groan when the car refuses to start again. She pops the hood and then we begin the entire process over again. It only takes a few minutes from start to finish, but I can feel Charleigh's annoyance with the situation in the air between us.
âWhy donât we get out of here for a little while?â I ask her when the car starts back up again.
âI have work.â
âIt could be work-related.â
Her eyes narrow as she studies me.
âYou wanted me to go furniture shopping with you. Weâre already in Boulder, so why not just drop by those stores you told me about. West Oak and Pottery Mill.â
âWest Elm and Pottery Barn.
âExactly.â
âI have a one-on-one meeting with Christiana about the presentation I made last night.â
âIt shouldnât take very long, right? Move it up, or reschedule for later today. Tell her youâve got a client emergency.â
Iâve always liked the way Charleigh looks when sheâs considering something. Her eyes get a distant look to them. Her lips press together into a thin line as her tongue peeks out of the corner of her mouth. And with a light shade of red on those lips, it has me thinking thoughts I shouldnât be thinking right now.
Her tongue stops moving and her eyes refocus on mine. "Okay," she says with a nod.
âOkay.â
âIâll be right back.â
Charleigh turns around, her heels clicking against the concrete floor as she heads toward the door at the end of the parking garage. Hips swaying, hair bouncingâit's hard not to gape, but I force myself to turn away and begin putting away the jumper cables.
It doesnât stop the thoughts, though. I canât get her out of my head. Everything about Charleigh is intoxicating and addictive. Her laugh. Her groans. The smattering of freckles along the bridge of her nose.
Even though itâs been over a month since we kissed that night in The Lookout, I can still feel her lips on mineâtheir softness, the way they taste. I want more, but Iâm not sure Charleigh does.
