CHAPTER TWENTY-EIGHT

Putting his phone back in his pocket, Connor walked down the street. It had never occurred to him that the house could be bugged. How stupid could he have been? He swore, then quickly put on a fake smile and gave a wave as he realized one of his neighbors was watching.

Connor hurried back into the house. He locked the doors and shut all the blinds, then spent several minutes looking around, trying to find any listening devices, with no success.

He swore to himself again.

He wasn’t a spy, didn’t know how to do all of this. Still, he should have been more careful. He fixed a stiff drink and sat at the kitchen island, thinking for a few minutes. Something was going on with the senator. She was asking too many questions, and she was angry with him. He had to be more careful.

Connor gulped down the drink, but it didn’t calm his nerves. Today had been awful. He’d never been so nervous in his life as meeting with Irena Garin. The woman had asked so many questions, too, wanted so much information, and he didn’t have answers yet. But he was going to have to get them.

Pouring himself another drink, he went into the living room. He set the glass down on the coffee table and sprawled on the couch, sipping as he stared up at the ceiling. Brooke barely crossed his mind. All of his focus was on what he had to do next.
