CHAPTER TWENTY-SEVEN

Dack called a half hour later.

“Still okay?”

The tinny computer voice zipped through the phone. Jo didn’t put him on a video call because she didn’t want Guadalupe or the boys to hear. The boys were enthralled with TV, but the nanny was keeping a nervous eye on her.

“We’re okay, so far.” Jo went into the bathroom and shut the door, ignoring the grime around the sink and in the tub. They weren’t going to be there for much longer.

Dack didn’t waste any time. “I rented a white Jeep Wrangler for you, an older model, not flashy. The agency’s five blocks away.” He gave her the address. “I’ve got a guy, Pablo Gomez, who’s getting some clothes and food for you. He’ll go with you across the border.”

“You can trust him?”

“He’s the best man I have down there.”

Dack was hedging, but she knew he was in a tight spot. He’d said he wasn’t sure if anyone on his team had been compromised, and it was clear he still wasn’t completely certain.

“Should we go without him?”

“If it was just you, I’d be fine with that. But with Guadalupe and the boys. I don’t know.”

“Okay, I’ll make it work. What’s the plan?”

“Pablo will pick up the car. Meet him near the car rental agency—that way no one sees you, and you can make sure no one follows you back to the motel.”

“What does he look like?”

“He’s about six feet tall, with short black hair. I told him to wear a dark cap, and he’ll tell you that he’s come for the delivery. If you sense anything wrong, bug out and call me.”

“And if all goes well, where are we going?”

“Get the hell out of the city, north toward Nogales Sonora. We can’t risk any border checkpoints, so when you get to Lomita, you’ll take a road west and follow it as far as you can. Then you’ll have to ditch the car and go on foot through the desert, crossing west of Nogales Sonora. I’ll send you a file with a map and directions. I have to stay on this side and work with my government contacts. They’re not happy about this turn of events.”

“Neither am I.” She didn’t hide her sarcasm.

He laughed wryly. “You’ll have to avoid other migrants and smugglers. We can’t risk anyone telling the cartels about you.”

Jo stared in the mirror and didn’t like the worry she saw in her face. “It’s not going to be easy.”

“Pablo will have enough supplies for your journey. Go at night, when it’s cooler and you have the cover of darkness.”

It felt like a suicide mission, but they definitely couldn’t stay where they were. She turned away from the mirror.

“What happens when I get the kids and Guadalupe over the border?”

“I don’t know. Let’s get that far first.” He continued with the plan. “Hopefully no one figures out what car you’ll be driving. That should get you as far as Lomita. You’ll be out of cell phone range for a while, but Pablo will have a satellite phone.
