CHAPTER TWENTY-SEVEN
Dack called a half hour later.
âStill okay?â
The tinny computer voice zipped through the phone. Jo didnât put him on a video call because she didnât want Guadalupe or the boys to hear. The boys were enthralled with TV, but the nanny was keeping a nervous eye on her.
âWeâre okay, so far.â Jo went into the bathroom and shut the door, ignoring the grime around the sink and in the tub. They werenât going to be there for much longer.
Dack didnât waste any time. âI rented a white Jeep Wrangler for you, an older model, not flashy. The agencyâs five blocks away.â He gave her the address. âIâve got a guy, Pablo Gomez, whoâs getting some clothes and food for you. Heâll go with you across the border.â
âYou can trust him?â
âHeâs the best man I have down there.â
Dack was hedging, but she knew he was in a tight spot. Heâd said he wasnât sure if anyone on his team had been compromised, and it was clear he still wasnât completely certain.
âShould we go without him?â
âIf it was just you, Iâd be fine with that. But with Guadalupe and the boys. I donât know.â
âOkay, Iâll make it work. Whatâs the plan?â
âPablo will pick up the car. Meet him near the car rental agencyâthat way no one sees you, and you can make sure no one follows you back to the motel.â
âWhat does he look like?â
âHeâs about six feet tall, with short black hair. I told him to wear a dark cap, and heâll tell you that heâs come for the delivery. If you sense anything wrong, bug out and call me.â
âAnd if all goes well, where are we going?â
âGet the hell out of the city, north toward Nogales Sonora. We canât risk any border checkpoints, so when you get to Lomita, youâll take a road west and follow it as far as you can. Then youâll have to ditch the car and go on foot through the desert, crossing west of Nogales Sonora. Iâll send you a file with a map and directions. I have to stay on this side and work with my government contacts. Theyâre not happy about this turn of events.â
âNeither am I.â She didnât hide her sarcasm.
He laughed wryly. âYouâll have to avoid other migrants and smugglers. We canât risk anyone telling the cartels about you.â
Jo stared in the mirror and didnât like the worry she saw in her face. âItâs not going to be easy.â
âPablo will have enough supplies for your journey. Go at night, when itâs cooler and you have the cover of darkness.â
It felt like a suicide mission, but they definitely couldnât stay where they were. She turned away from the mirror.
âWhat happens when I get the kids and Guadalupe over the border?â
âI donât know. Letâs get that far first.â He continued with the plan. âHopefully no one figures out what car youâll be driving. That should get you as far as Lomita. Youâll be out of cell phone range for a while, but Pablo will have a satellite phone.
