Chapter Twelve

BLAKE

“Suit up,” Wolfe calls out.

I arch a brow at Will. Another week has passed without a murder or a decent lead, so we’ve taken on some other cases. Today, we’re scheduled to help storm a drug den or something. I didn’t ask for specifics.

I grab my Kevlar vest and shrug it on. Checking my gun and putting it into my holster, I nod at Will. Declan, Jimmy, and Nikki are ready, too. The last one is Wolfe, who seems to be on edge.

“We’ll get instructions when we get there. Remember, this is not our case. Arrests will be made by the guys from Narcotics.”

We all nod, then follow him outside. He, Jim, and Nikki take the lead in his car, Declan, Will, and I in a car right behind them.

My mind is a million miles away, mainly because I’ve been talking to Tia every night. She doesn’t let me drive her home, only calling me when she is finally there. Either way, it eases my mind.

There isn’t even much for us to talk about most times, but I like hearing her fall asleep. I wonder how much longer we can lie to each other about not wanting this to be something more.

There is the issue of time. I know she doesn’t have much free time during the day, and when we finally solve this murder case and my hours go back to somewhat regular, we won’t have many days together.

God, I cannot believe I’m thinking about a relationship when I’ve done everything in my power to avoid one for such a long time.

“Wonder what we’ll be walking into. Might be dangerous,” Will mutters from next to me. I turn in my seat, holding his eyes. There’s a challenge in them, and I can’t help but feel as if he’s telling me to text Tia because we don’t know what’s coming.

Or maybe that’s just wishful thinking because I want to let her know I’m thinking about her. Then again, it would probably just worry her. I never check in during the day.

I never check in period.

“I don’t care. I’ve missed the action. Besides, finally catching bad guys again will make me feel as if we’ve accomplished something. These bartender cases do my head in. I mean, why kill two women, then just stop? Especially when he’s sure he killed the wrong ones?” I arch a brow at him. We’ve been over the same argument time and time again, yet I want to do it just one more time.

“Maybe he’s afraid. Maybe he realized one of them was the right one after all. We talked to their families and friends more than once. Whatever he was looking for, maybe he realized he’d found it in the last victim,” Will states, indulging me.

Not that I like the idea of him roaming the streets, but thinking there’ll never be another victim seems like a good exchange.

Declan shakes his head. “I doubt that.” He clears his throat. “Honestly, I don’t like the idea of him out there, and neither do you, Blake.
