Belly bands require minimal cover garments, because they keep the gun so close to the body. Jorge Amselle
This belly band holster from DeSantis is designed to ride below the beltline in front. All that’s needed to cover it are pants. DeSantis Gunhide
Some belly band holsters keep the gun in place using only tension, while some have retention. DeSantis Gunhide
For increased levels of activity, some degree of retention is recommended. DeSantis Gunhide
Those who use belly band holsters need to be mindful that many of them feature extra pockets, either on the strong side, the support side or both. These can be used for carrying spare magazines, ammunition or other essential items. It might not be a priority to reach these, but your cover garment should provide easy access to them. You might also need to access other items on your belly band with your support hand if your strong hand is occupied with holding your gun.
There is also the issue of retention. Many belly band holsters utilize nothing more than the elastic. This is fine for normal activities such as sitting and walking about. If you’re involved in anything much more active—say you’re attacked—this retention might not keep the gun where it needs to be for you to reach it. You might lose the gun altogether or worse, it fall into the hands of your assailant. At least with a tucked-in shirt the gun won’t go flying, even if it comes loose from the holster. You might not be able to reach it, but neither will anyone else.
If you get a belly band holster with additional retention, make sure to keep that in mind when you select a cover garment. You might need to be able to reach inside or under your shirt to a greater extent to release the retention strap before you can access your gun.
