THE ITHACA 37 Defense Pump (trench gun) features trim dimensions, Hi-Viz adjustable sights, walnut stocks and rubber recoil pad. Out of all the guns tested, it is the author's favorite shotgun due to its retro nature.
THE ITHACA 37, a design that hasn't been stuck in 1937, has clearly been upgraded to compete with “newer” designs. The Defense Synthetic version features an 8-shot extended magazine tube, synthetic stocks and bead front sight. The Model 37 is characterized by having the ultimate in easy “swingability” as well as a smooth operating action that limits dirt and debris to only one entry point, through its bottom loading/ejecting port.
2. This is an American-made product, using modern CNC manufacturing techniques, and is a finely machined piece of firearms manufacturing, right down to the magazine tube endcap and sling swivel attachment point. It speaks of attention to detail not seen in mass produced weapons of modern manufacturing.
3. The design of the Model 37 itself is very trim in terms of handling; it's a 12 that handles like a 20. Working the action just feels “precision.” When I got the gun at the gun shop, it drew a lot of interest from the sales staff. One salesman explained that his very first shotgun was a 16 gauge Model 37, so the new Model 37 evoked a lot of fond memories of his youth. Others who never handled a Model 37 were impressed by the feel of the cycling of the action. Weight with the walnut stock is seven pounds, giving it excellent swingability and pointability, which is critical in multiple target combat situations.
4. As a design that almost disappeared from modern manufacture, the 37 is sure to be the center of attention at any shooting range. With an MSRP of $539, it is a very affordable center of attention. While not truly “tactical” in appearance, it is certainly viable in home defense, even though it doesn't have a place to mount a tactical light. While a tactical light is a great advantage in many defensive situations, we have, after all, managed to get by without them for many years. Don't let the inability to easily mount a light deter you from getting a gun that can be used for a variety of tasks. The Model 37 Defense Gun would make a fine deer gun or camp defense gun. Get a shotgun stock nylon elastic shell carrier to hold spare rounds in place. Receiver mounted holders aren't readily available for Model 37s, and, in any case, they would detract from the retro look of the gun.
This is an American-made product, and a finely-machined piece of firearms manufacturing, right down to the magazine tube endcap and sling swivel attachment point.
