557 URBAN COUNTER-SNIPER

What the 750 is to the 550 line, this rifle is to the 557 line. Designed more for police use than military, the 557 Urban Counter-Sniper is intended for engaging targets out to 400 yards, which makes it more suitable for urban environs, as the name reflects. According to CZ, the use of a 16-inch barrel instead of an 18 to 20-inch barrel equates to about a 150 feet per second drop in velocity. This can be significant, but generally not at minute-of-badguy at 400 yards or less.

It comes with a three-prong flash hider which serves as a QD mount for a suppressor. CZ-USA doesn’t yet have details yet on what suppressor the QD mount works with, and they don’t yet know what the thread pitch is — they haven’t actually started importing this rifle yet. Depending on the thread pitch, you should be able to use your own muzzle device or adaptor for whatever suppressor you own. The carbon fiber composite stock is made by Manners — a company known for outstanding rifle stocks. It uses a detachable box magazine, with a 10-rounder included. For easy bolt manipulation, it has an oversized bolt handle. The receiver has an integral 19mm dovetail machined into it, but the rifle comes with a 1913 rail attached to it. Just like the other 557 rifles, it has a cold hammer-forged barrel and a fully adjustable trigger. The entire rifle is half an inch short of 40 inches and weights 10.5 pounds.

As for the 400 yards, CZ did their research. There has always been the idea that the average distance that police snipers engage a target at is somewhere between 70 and 77 yards. Of everyone I talked to, though, no one could source that data. It was just one of those things that “everyone knows.” Except, with things like that, I usually find that those things aren’t true. Just a little bit of research revealed that the source of this “fact” was the FBI crime statistics. Also with my research, I found the American Sniper Association (ASA) (americansniper.org), when inquiring about this report from the FBI — found out that the FBI did not, and never has, collected data of this sort. The whole 70-77 yard thing is a myth.
