The weather had turned cooler, and it was windy today. Fall weather was my favorite, as long as it didnât rain. Judging by the dark clouds in the sky, I thought it just might do that today. I brushed my hair back behind my ear when we got out of the car at the car dealership, and glanced up at the sky again as gray clouds gathered overhead. âI wonder if itâs going to rain tonight?â
âWeâre due for some rain,â Christy said, as we wandered over to look at a new car. It was a sedan, but it still managed to look sporty.
âOh, I like that,â I said as I ran a finger along the side of the red car. My car was seven years old, and while it wasnât ancient, it would be nice to have a new one. But Ethan and I had some financial goals we wanted to meet for the business as well as saving money for Charlieâs future, and a new car wasnât in the plans right now.
Christy leaned over to look into the car. âI would love a new car. One of these days, I swear Iâm going to get a fancy little sports car just for myself.â
âThat would be a lot of fun.â I turned when I spotted a salesperson headed in our direction. It was Casey Graupman. âRight on time.â
Christy straightened up and turned to look. âSo I see.â
Casey wore a red blazer and a black skirt with red pumps. Her short, curly red hair waved in the breeze. âGood afternoon! How are you ladies doing today? Oh wait, donât you two own the candy store?â
I nodded. âWe do. Iâm Mia, and this is my sister, Christy. Weâre doing great; we just thought weâd stop by and look at cars. You know, just to dream a little.â
She nodded, still smiling. âThereâs nothing like taking a test drive in a new car, is there? Sometimes I do it just because I can.â She chuckled. âItâs the only way to get an idea of what kind of car you want.â
âThatâs true.â I glanced back at the car we were standing in front of. âIt gets good gas mileage.â
She nodded. âIt sure does. Would you like to take it for a drive?â
I turned back to her. âNo, weâre just looking right now.â
âWe just want to see whatâs out there so when we get ready to buy something, weâll have an idea of what we want,â Christy said. âSo, Casey, did you hear about the murder at the old graveyard? Itâs all anyone is talking about.â
Casey sobered and nodded. âI did. I just canât imagine anyone doing something like that. Ed Robinson was such a sweet man. He didnât deserve to die like that.â
âOh, were you a friend of Edâs?â I asked.
She hesitated, then shook her head. âNo, I canât say that we were friends, but he bought a car from me recently. He was just such a nice person, very easy to talk to. Itâs always nice having customers like that.
