First upside down shop

Viktor & Rolf, the Netherlands-based fashion house, created the world’s first upside down shop in Milan, Italy, in 2005. Customers enter through an upside down door and encounter chandeliers spouting from the floor, chairs on the parquet-covered ceiling, and even inverted fireplaces. It was created by Dutch owners Viktor Horsting and Rolf Snoeren with Buro Tettero and SZI Design.

Commercial building

In terms of floor area, the world’s largest commercial building under one roof is the flower-auction building Bloemenveiling Aalsmeer in Aalsmeer, Netherlands. The floor surface of the building measures 782,599 m² (8.423 million ft²), enough floorspace to accommodate 14 Great Pyramids.

Department store

The Shinsegae (“New World”) department store at Centum City in the Haeundae-gu district of Busan, South Korea, covers 293,905 m² (3.16 million ft²) – an area equivalent to more than 50 football fields. The store opened on 3 March 2009 and, in addition to its luxury brand concessions, contains a spa, a roof garden and a 60-tee golf driving range.

In-store shop façade

The three-storey Galeries Lafayette (France) store, located in the Morocco Mall in Casablanca, Morocco, has an in-store shop façade covering a total area of 3,381.92 m² (36,402.68 ft²). The store, developed and managed by Groupe Aksal (Morocco), was designed by Davide Padoa of Design International (UK) and inaugurated in November 2011.

Illuminated façade

Mall Taman Anggrek in Grogol Petamburan, West Jakarta, Indonesia, has a curved continuous LED-illuminated façade that covers 8,675.3 m² (93,380 ft²) and displays full-colour animated video images. At night, the whole front wall of the building glows with the light of 862,920 pixels. The installation was completed on 29 February 2012.

Underground shopping centre

The PATH walkway in Toronto, Canada, has 27 km (16.7 miles) of shopping arcades with 371,600 m2 (4 million ft2) of retail space accommodating around 1,200 shops and services. More than 50 buildings, five subway stations and a rail terminal are accessible through the complex.

Car park

The car park at the West Edmonton Mall in Alberta, Canada, can hold 20,000 vehicles, with overflow facilities in an adjoining park for 10,000 more cars. West Edmonton Mall is the largest shopping complex in North America.

Shopping bag

A cloth bag measuring 83.82 m (275 ft) high (minus handles) and 38.10 m (125 ft) wide was made by Raj Bahadur (India) and displayed in Ghaziabad, India, in February 2009.

The largest paper shopping bag was presented by the hypermarket chain Kaufland (Romania) in Bucharest, Romania, on 18 May 2009. The bag – made from recycled paper – measured 4.18 x 6.62 x 1.79 m (13 ft 8 in x 21 ft 8 in x 5 ft 10 in).

Price tag

A price tag measuring 3.60 m (11 ft 9 in) long and 5.07 m (16 ft 7 in) wide was made by Forum Ankara Outlet and Media Markt in Ankara, Turkey, on 28 March 2010. The giant tag was hung from an advert for a refrigerator outside the mall.

Motorized shopping trolley

Monster Kart is an oversized trolley constructed by Frederick Reifsteck (USA) from stainless steel and fitted with a 900-hp 454 Chevrolet motor. The motorized and driveable cart measures 8.
