Chapter Fourteen

“Is there something about Shelby that makes you think she’s guilty?” While I was betting Benson’s money on Shooter, Myranda would’ve taken her portion and placed it all on Shelby.

“She quit as soon as we realized the guitar was missing.” Myranda furrowed her brow. Her words were clipped. “And she was never a good fit here. Don’t know why she was interested in being a nanny. She didn’t seem to be invested in the kids.”

“Why did you hire her?”

“None of that stuff comes out during the interview. It’s all smiles and rainbows.” She shook her head. “She didn’t have many references, and they were all vague. But like I said, finding a good nanny around here is like finding a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. So I took a chance on her.”

“Did she do anything questionable?”

“She wasn’t very attentive. Always on her phone with her boyfriend. Who, of course, is in a band. You can’t swing a dead cat around here without hitting a musician.” She cringed when she realized what she said. “Sorry.”

“Nothing to apologize for, as long as Persephone’s okay.” I’d meant to ask Myranda about her history with nannies, and how Shelby was different. But I had a feeling this was a personal vendetta. Otherwise, she’d been sweet as pie. So I needed to find out why Shelby rubbed Myranda the wrong way. “I should probably get back to her. We haven’t been together for long, and I don’t want her to think I abandoned her in a room full of strangers.”

“You’ll talk to Shelby?” Myranda asked as I rose from the island.

I nodded. “Can you give me the name of the café she works at? I’ll head there this afternoon.”

“Absolutely.” She pulled a pen and post it out of a drawer and wrote down the name of the café. “I’d love to compare notes with you. Maybe you could come to spin class with me in the morning?”

I’d need it, since I was headed into my third meal of the day, and it was barely after noon.

But spin? Ugh. “Sure.”

“Great. It will be so much fun.”

When I opened the studio door, all eyes were on me. Awkward.

“I’m just gonna grab Persephone and head out.”

“That’s probably a good idea. Shame though, because those two are finally getting along.” Benson nodded toward Duke and Persephone.

Were they cuddling?

I’d ask Persephone about that later. But no doubt she’d made progress with the old hound. Right now, I had to focus on human drama.

“What happened?”

Benson pursed his lips together and glared at his bandmates. “The record company thinks we won’t be able to deliver the album on time. Violation of our contract.”

“What does that mean?” From the sour expressions in the room, I gathered nothing good.

“They’ve declared the contract null and void. Preventative measure, our manager said.” Benson’s voice was a growl. “That means no album and no tour.”

“No!” I gasped. “What about the band?”

I turned to them, daring one of them to say they planned to bail on Benson.
