Bennett

“What’s this shit I’m hearing, Bennett? You called off your engagement without consulting me first? And now you’re in New Orleans, partying, screwing some escort, and doing God knows what else?” My father takes a large gasp of air, gaining his second wind when he proclaims, “You’re done. I’m not doing this with you anymore, Ben. How can I trust you if you can’t follow through with a simple transaction.”

I don’t believe he knows what the word means because marrying Londyn would’ve been anything but simple.

It would’ve been things my father knows nothing about because everything in his life has been uncomplicated. The business was passed down to him by his father, and then it would go to me.

But not anymore.

I broke our arrangement, and I did it under his nose.

And I really don’t give a fuck.

My father doesn’t even have the common courtesy to give me a heads up that I was marrying Londyn in the first place. I just announced it at a party, and the shit was allegedly set in stone.

But now things are different.

So much different.

And I can’t see myself marrying anyone.

“Sorry to disappoint, Pops,” I vouch simply, striding through an empty house that’s for sale. My realtor stepped outside to give me privacy, and Dad over here is screwing with the vibe.

Just by this phone call alone, I don’t want it.

“Disappoint?” he repeats, his tone gravelly and stern. “You did more than that, boy.”

“Well, serve this as a lesson to you not to ship your kid off to marry some bitchy ass socialite that I had no intention of dating, courting, or fucking.”

“You stupid—”

“If there isn’t anything else, I have to go. I’m looking to buy a house in New Orleans, and you’re taking up my realtor’s time.”

“New Orleans? What in the hell are you buying property down there for?”

“Lola is here.”

“Lola? What in God’s name did you do now, Bennett? Did you cheat on Londyn? Is this why the engagement was broken off?”

“No dad, Londyn and I were never going to get married no matter how badly you wanted us to. It was a business relationship and nothing else.”

“Geezus fucking— I swear to God, I don’t know what the hell has gotten into you but fix it.”

I press my lips together. “That won’t be happening.”

“Bennett, I won’t be hearing about this.”

“Good job. Just plug your ears.”

“Bennett,” he snides. “You have a responsibility to not make this family look like a bunch of heedless idiots. Our name goes back generations. We are meant for big things, and sometimes sacrifices must be made.”

“As long as you’re the one not making them.”

“I’ve made my share,” he retorts sharply. “I’m just not a mindless idiot who allows his feelings to get in the way.”

I roll my eyes. “Talk later, Dad…or not. I don’t give a fuck.”

“Bennett, I swear to God, if you don’t bother to mend this, you’ll leave me with no other choice.”

He’s right, but it’s not anything I’m afraid of.
