“Pete, come here.”

He turned to see Jesse holding out a hand to him. “Eh?”

“We have to get out of here, come on.”

“Why? This is working out pretty well.”

She shook her head and took a few steps towards him, her hand still extended. “Toby says something weird is going on, and this place is one of the ones having problems. Come on, we need to get back to the druid ring.”

He tossed the burning stone he already had in hand. It decimated the skeleton, blasting bits of it several yards away in every direction.

Until it flickered whole once more and took another step toward him… but then it vanished again, the bone fragments settling where they had fallen.

Yeah, that didn’t seem normal. His last step faltered and he nearly tripped as he took hold of Jesse’s hand, his eyes still on the advancing skeleton hoard.

All of them were flickering about. It would be next to impossible to hit them as they blinked around, even if he hit a few just for how packed together they were. They’d swarm him in no time.

One of the trees vanished for a moment, too, but it left its shadow. Weird.

Green light washed out his vision.

His feet crunched on grass a moment later.

There was a… distant sense of numbness, but it passed after a few seconds.

“What was that about?” He wiggled his fingers… they seemed better already. Not perfect… but better.

Jesse shook her head. “It’s… complicated.”

Pete rolled his eyes. “Try me.”

Poe was messing with something in front of his face Pete couldn’t see. His headset must be screwing up. “I agree. Still getting static…”

She frowned as she sat down beneath the large central tree amongst the standing stones. Her mana was gone. “Fair enough… just some trouble with the database that keeps the zones happy. That one was freaking out. They might have to restart it, but they didn’t want to try that with Pete there. No telling what would happen to him.”

Sam shook her head. “Don’t give us the end user spiel. You said the area was ‘one of the ones having problems.’ That implies there are more.”

Jesse gave Sam a mild glare. “It wasn’t just the desert, no. But they’re working on it. Nothing to fret over. Shit happens.”

Poe raised an eyebrow before shrugging at Sam. “I don’t think ‘shit happens’ is part of the end user spiel.”

“Eh… probably not. Besides,” she turned her head a bit, a hand held up near her temple, “it’s well past time I was gone. Get some lunch, hit the books again.” She sighed.

“I’m telling you, practice tests. Better for remembering than staring at a book.”

Sam waved dismissively. “Yeah, yeah. I know.”

“Call you in a minute.”

She nodded and disappeared.

He gave Jesse and Pete a nod. “Good luck. Let us know if you need anything.”

Jesse waved. “Hasta.”

Pete was looking over his spell interface. It had become a lot more complicated in short order. He turned his eyes to Poe for a moment. “Good luck with the test stuff.”

“Thanks, probably need it.
