There was barely a flush of pink in the dawn sky as I raced to the gym for my morning workout. You might think that I’d want to save my energy for the huge night ahead—the annual Met Costume Institute Gala, the event of the season. But no, I needed to get my butt kicked by a trainer at the Tracy Anderson gym. It was agony—a perfect combination of masochism (me) and sadism (my trainer). And I wasn’t alone. Even at this early hour the gym was already populated by a sampling of tonight’s gala attendees, all just as focused on the need to get into their dresses and not shame themselves under Anna Wintour’s steely examination. Since most of us had also been starving ourselves for the last week, it’s a wonder there weren’t casualties.

After the training session, I was picked up in a black SUV by one of our full-time drivers and I pulled out my iPhone. Thirty-two new emails in the last two hours. As always, I looked at Grace’s emails first. She’d prioritize everything else for me, and also make sure I stayed on schedule.

Yo, Emms. You have an 8 a.m. call with Harvey Weinstein. Then I’ll be at your place at 8:45 a.m. to pick you up for a 9:15 a.m. arrival at the Botanic Garden. Note that the writer will be at the shoot and interview will follow.—Grace
