The Marquis Armande de Ronquerolles prowled Broadway back and forth, closely examining every blonde woman. At 1pm he lunched in Taylor's Restaurant, said to be popular with ladies.

He sat at a window overlooking Broadway and examined endless throngs of pedestrians beneath awnings. If she's in New York City, she'll come to Broadway sooner or later. And then she’ll be mine again, I hope.

Farther up Broadway, Catherine arrived at Wallack's Theater for her first rehearsal. She stopped at the costumer's studio and was issued a short, flimsy dress. She asked, ”Where's the rest of it?”

“There is nothing else.”
