Harper

“Harper, we need you,” Susie called.

Glancing over her shoulder, Harper set down her tools and followed Susie back into the nurses’ station. Something in Susie’s voice had her quickening her pace.

“What’s going on?”

Sighing, Susie told her, “It’s begun. Just had someone come in with a gnarly gash on their hand from using a rusty saw.”

“Stitches?” Harper asked.

“Stitches.”

“Where’s Dr. Anderson?”

Susie rolled her eyes upwards. “No idea. Not in the staff lounge. Dr. Lawson is with a patient with a suspected concussion from falling off their roof. Why people think now is the time to be shoveling their roofs, of all things, I’ll never know.”

Annoyance flared to life inside Harper. Instead of freezing her butt off as she’d boarded up the windows, she could have been helping, doing her job, the one she was trained for, and not the busy work John gave her.

They reached the exam room to see a red-faced man with his hand cupped to his chest. His wife stood next to him with concern stamped on her face. Even in the dim light from the flashlights, Harper saw the crimson blossoming through the towels wrapped around his hands.

“Are you the doctor?” the man asked.

Susie and Harper shared a look before Harper plastered a smile on her face. She should be used to this question by now, but every time someone looked down their nose at her because of her title, it annoyed her. She was just as capable as any of the doctors. Hell, she had a more stable hand than Dr. Anderson.

“The doctors are currently with other patients,” Harper said. “My name’s Harper. I’m a registered nurse and I’ll be taking care of you until Dr. Anderson can come look.”

The man hesitated before saying, “I’m sure I can just wait for the doctor.”

“Of course, Sir, though I should warn you, it may be some time. We’re busy,” Harper told the man.

His eyes narrowed, but before he could say anything, his wife said, “Larry… Just let the nurses handle it.”

The man opened his mouth to complain, but shut it when he saw the severe expression on his wife’s face.

Susie helped him onto the table while Harper donned gloves. With the power out, they didn’t have running water. It made keeping things sterile just that more complicated. Grabbing the supplies she’d need from the cabinets, Harper made her way back to the patient and helped Susie unwrap the wound. It wasn’t as severe as she’d expected. There was a deep gash from the base of his thumb to the middle of his hand. She didn’t see any bone, though, so that was a relief.

“This will sting,” she warned before setting to work disinfecting his wound.

“What happened?” Susie asked.

Grunting in pain, the man took a moment before replying, “Sawing wood. Don’t know what happened, but one minute I was holding the log, and the next there was blood all over the place.”

“Luckily, you didn’t hit the bone,” Harper told him. “It’ll be a nice scar to show off, though.”

He gave her a grunt, which caused his wife to roll her eyes upwards.
