CHAPTER 38
âYour cousinâs at the end of the bar, by the restrooms,â Fat Jimmy told Doc before he had a chance to ask, or say hello.
âYou trying to hurry me along?â Doc said. âWhatâs the matter? He breaking up the customers again?â
âI know a few he might get a shot at later. Look around you.â Not an empty chair, four-thirty on a weekday afternoon. âUnemployment checks hit today. Gonna be at least three arguments and probably one fight. Your cousin stays long, maybe two.â
âYou donât seem too upset.â
âI seen the job he done on Dan Connor. He wants to do it again, I got candidates for him. I never had a bouncer in here, but Iâm getting too old for this shit.â
âHe was only a year behind you in school. Your problemâs not youâre too old. Youâre too fat.â
âKeep that fat shit up and Iâll put extra spit in your beer next time.â
âJeez, Jimmy. I thought fat people were supposed to be jolly. I mean, the sign over the door says, âFat Jimmyâs.â Now youâre sensitive about it?â
âYou want jolly? Har-de-fucking-har-har. That better?â
Doc looked at him, wagged his head. âCould you bring me an MGD, and another of whatever my cousinâs drinking? Iâll open mine myself.â
Jimmy flashed him the finger. âYouâll drink whatever I bring you, wise ass.â
Doc walked to the end of the bar nearest the menâs room, elbowed his way in between Nick and a guy he thought might have conveyed with the place when Jimmy bought it, and he had mileage on him then. The old-timer sprinkled salt in his beer and stirred with a finger that looked like it had four knuckles.
âThis place is something else,â Nick said. He wore the Bears hat, backward on his head again so everyone in the seating area could read it. âChicago has some dives, but this joint has an atmosphere all its own.â
âThatâs because the windows havenât been open since he bought it.â Jimmy waddled over and dropped off their beers. âI need to talk to you.â
âI figured. Remember, Iâm a detective. For example, when you called a few hours ago and said, âWe need to talk,â I deduced thatâs what was up. My only question is, how come we never meet anyplace nice? I feel so cheap. Iâm not the other detective, am I? You know, the one you sneak around with while the legal detective stays at home and cleans up your reports for you.â
âThat license plate you got the hit on last night. Carâs registered to Yuri Volkov.â
âSergeiâs boy?â
Doc nodded.
âNow we know whoâs in charge.â
Doc tasted his beer. âGet off Rollison now.â
âYou want me to take Yuri?â
âNo.â It came out harder than Doc intended. âStay away from Yuri. I donât have the full scoop on him yet, but I know enough to know you donât want him finding out youâre following him. Or Rollison, for that matter. Get that GPS thing off his car. We canât afford anyone to find it accidentally and you not be aware of it.
