Chapter 13:

Mirror Ghost

“Heading to a bar at nine in the morning. We’ve really hit rock bottom.”

Shay thought Gideon’s joke fell a little flat, but was too nice to say so. Max managed a weak chuckle.

World Tree Bar and Restaurant, their current destination, had opened the year before, taking over an abandoned warehouse in downtown Ainsley. It had been the place to go for a hot minute, but Shay had never actually gone, even though Ainsley was only half an hour’s drive away from Teton Falls, in the opposite direction of Doveton.

“It’s the closest potential site that we’ve had a call from,” Jo said, not looking up from her tablet.

“I know,” Gideon said. He was sitting in the back with Shay. It was cold, the heat blasting from the front trickling to the back of the Explorer. Shay didn’t normally sit in the back. She wasn’t enjoying it.

“You sure you want to come?” Shay asked. “If there’s a mirror, there’s probably a powerful ghost.”

“Already said I’d help. Besides, you literally punched a ghost out of existence. I am sticking with you.” Gideon grinned at her.

“Technically that was more the sachet than me, I just stuck it in there,” Shay said, but she couldn’t help smiling back.

“Right, sure.” Gideon nodded. “Still sticking with you. So, what do you typically do for a job like this? How does a bookstore owner end up doing house calls? I’m genuinely curious.”

“It is a metaphysical bookstore,” Max said.

“Still.”

“Well, the vast majority of spirits are site bound, so our clients can’t exactly bring the haunting to us,” Jo said. “It’s actually how Arlo and I got started. I was doing tarot readings online as a side hustle and he needed help with a house cleansing. Since I was in the area I agreed to meet him. We started working together after that, and when my grandma left me the house I decided to open up the shop. Have an official place to do readings and a home base for everything else.”

“And a place for random people you meet who can touch ghosts,” Shay said.

“Yes, that too.” Jo shrugged. She sounded a bit fragile. Shay couldn’t blame her. Without Max she’d probably fall to pieces. “Typically, this would be Arlo’s job. He would go in, get a feel for the place, try to follow the energy. He would then either remove the object that was causing the haunting, or he would instruct the owner on how to cleanse the area or keep things quiet. If needed I would see the place, too. I’m hoping to find one of those mirrors, especially since we no longer have ah… legal access to the other one. Barring that, well, I’ll just have to do what Arlo would and try to figure out the haunting.”

“Renovations or a new object in the bar,” Gideon said.

“Yes, precisely.”

Max chimed in. “Or something could have happened recently that made things worse.”

“Or satanic cult symbols,” Shay offered.

Gideon shrugged. “Those are largely myths. Especially around here. We have a whole different cult flavor.
