CHAPTER 17

SOLANA

We should have gone on a honeymoon.

Sighing, I looked out the window as Brick drove through the gates of the estate and onto the main road. Two days had passed since the wedding, and nothing of note had transpired. Well, except for the conversation I had with Grim regarding my security detail. Now that I was Mrs. Whittaker, I was able to leave the estate, but not without an army of guards. Five in total, with Brick being the leader. According to Grim, I was to defer to Brick regarding anything security related. This was the only reason I allowed this caravan of SUVs, one in front of my vehicle and one behind, to escort me to my parents’ home.

Over the last two days, I coordinated with my parents’ staff to have all my belongings boxed up. Unfortunately, my parents refused to have them delivered to The Cerberus. If I wanted my stuff, I had to come and get it. Grim was against me going over there, hence the reason he didn’t know about this little trip. Even though he could provide everything I needed, I wanted my own shit that I bought with my own money.

Soon, Brick was pulling up to the house. He put the car in park and turned to face me. “We’re going in and getting out as soon as possible. No wandering off, no delaying.” He handed me a gorgeous gold charm bracelet with a few charms, including a grim reaper. Real subtle, Grim. “Grim was going to give this to you tonight, but since we’re already out, I need to give it to you now. If you run into any trouble at any time, you press the Cerberus. A signal will go out to me and the triplets, and we’ll come to you right away.”

Rolling my eyes, I slipped on my shades. “Isn’t this a bit overkill?” I joked.

“No, Mrs. Whittaker, it isn’t. Our family has many enemies that wouldn’t hesitate to use you to dismantle the empire. My job is to protect you. Your job is to make my job easier by following the rules.”

“Got it,” I said.

Brick studied me for a few seconds before nodding and exiting the car. I sat and waited for him to open my door. Stepping out in the frigid November air, I waited for my security to flank me, each of them wearing sunglasses to block out the afternoon sun. Straightening my leather pencil skirt, I pulled my matching jacket over my shoulders as the wind clawed through my silk leopard print blouse. I stared up at the house that hadn’t felt like home for a long time. The last time I was here, I was planning my escape. Now, I was returning as a married woman.

Life changes on a dime.

We moved as a unit up to the door, and even though I hated to admit it, I felt a lot more at ease with the five security guards surrounding me. Brick rang the bell, and it was promptly answered by a staff member.
