Chapter Fifteen

Perfect Amount of Bum

During lunch the next day, Kit peered over her teacup at Greengage’s favourite daughter. Laura was blowing on the liquid in her own mug, some sort of sweet coffee. Vanilla-caramel-foamy-marshmallow-pixie-dust macchiato, or whatever. Sweet tooth or not, Kit had to admit that it looked and smelled amazing.

Like Laura.

She coughed and scrambled for something to say to shake the thought. “This sandwich tastes like it was made last week.”

Laura looked it over. “It does look a little soggy. Shall I go ask them to make you a new one?”

“Nah. I’m too hungry to wait.”

“Suit yourself,” Laura replied with a smile.

“So, was yesterday’s lunch as crappy as you thought it would be?”

“Worse. They were both grumpy because I was late, especially Tom.”

“You did tell them to start without you.”

“Yes, but Aunt Sybil says that is not proper etiquette.”

“For Christ’s sake.”

“Exactly. They’re driving me mad. I did contact contractors to have a look at one of the old cottages in the end. But until they come back to me with an estimate, I’m stuck. It’s fine when I can work, but weekends and evenings are awful.”

Kit scratched her neck. “Well, when I got back from London, I was kinda avoiding some of my own problems and started a lengthy project – weeding out the nonfiction section. Which is huge for a small island! I still have some to do. And after that there’s the stock of nonfiction in the basement. You wouldn’t believe the amount of duplicates down there. So,” she adjusted her glasses, “if you want a project away from home, you could lend me a hand. I’m mainly doing it when the library is closed. Since there isn’t enough budget to pay me for my time, I treat myself to cheesy music and sweets while I do it.”

Laura smiled impishly. “Hm. Which sweets?”

“I brought chocolate last time, but we can expand the selection to anything your sweet tooth desires.”

Laura held out her hand. “Deal. When do I start?”

Kit shook the hand, exhilaration bubbling in her blood. “Tonight?”

“I’ll be there,” Laura vowed. “Right after the library closes.”

“Brilliant!”

“Kit?”

“Yeah?”

She seemed to hesitate. “May I ask what you were avoiding?”

Kit blew out a breath. “Um, partly Aimee’s sticky situation and partly something more personal. It’s a long story. I’ll tell you later, promise.”

Laura beamed, and it hit Kit straight in the chest.

“All right. I’m nothing if not patient,” Laura said. “After all, I was in a secret relationship for a little over a decade.”

Kit sipped her tea. “Yeah. Crazy-pants.”

Laura playfully slapped her arm. “For that, you’re not going to get any of my superior library-sorting treats tonight. Now, eat your manky sandwich before we both have to get back to work.”
