6.19. Honours to the gymnasiarchos Mantidorus in Eretria
IG 12.9.236
The following fragmentary inscription, dated to about 100 BC, was discovered in excavations of the gymnasium in Eretria (on the island of Euboea). As in 6.8 and 6.25, the gymnasium is described as a place where literary instruction is offered; of special interest is Mantidorusâ hiring of an Athenian literary scholar whose lessons are open to anybody who wants to attend. His provision of olive oil also rates mention here. Further reading: Richardson and Heermance 1896: 173â90; Kennell 2001.
Mantidorus, son of Callicrates, who was elected gymnasiarchos by the people, has, in the performance of all the duties associated with the office, conducted himself with distinction and in a manner worthy of himself, his ancestors and the faith placed in him by the people. When, on account of his competitive spirit, there was a gathering of a larger number of children (paides), epheboi and the others falling within the scope of his office, he provided leadership in ensuring orderly conduct in the place through the entire period of his office, residing in the gymnasium all year long. He made available an ample supply of olive oil and unguents as generously as he could. Utterly committed to help the young, he used his own resources to make available the Homeric scholar (philologos), Dionysius of Athens, son of Philotas, who gave lectures in the gymnasium to the epheboi, the children and all others properly disposed towards learning (paideia). Each month, on behalf of the children, the epheboi and all the others â¦, he performed sacrificial rites to Hermes and Heraclesâ¦.
