Chapter Nine

Bensharie landed on the platform outside the hut. Amar strode over to him and leaned against the young dragon’s chest. Neither said anything for a long moment. “Let’s get out of here,” Amar said finally.

Kanvar had not come out after him, but Amar did not want to talk to anyone in the village. Certainly not Kanvar or Rajan, not even his wife, Mani. Things had been a bit strained between the two of them since . . . since when? He tried to think. Since they came to the village? Since Rajahansa was killed? Or before that. Since Haidar and Liander had abused her in the palace? Or even farther back. Since she found out Amar was a Naga and tried to kill him? That had been a breaking point, one he’d worked hard to mend since he’d brought her to live with him in Kundiland. He’d promised her she’d be safe and happy at the palace. That had not turned out to be true. At least she was not the only woman here now. Thank the fountain, Tana and Eska kept her company. Amar doubted he was much good for companionship at the moment. For her part, Mani had tried hard to rebuild their relationship. If there was a breach, it came from Amar’s heart.

You’re afraid to let yourself love, Bensharie said as he took flight with Amar on his back, because of Rajahansa. You fight with Rajan. You fight with Kanvar. You are gentle with the ladies, but your heart is cold, even with your wife.

She senses it, Amar said.

Bensharie lifted above the canopy and hovered in the sunlight. The throb of insects, the call of monkeys and birds, and the hiss of lesser dragons gave life to the towering trees beneath them. The Black River twisted its way toward the coast like a snake through the greenery. Have you been fighting with Mani too? Bensharie asked. He always kept himself fully shielded from Amar when he spent time with his wife.

Amar winced. We’ve been having a disagreement.

About?

She does not want me to go to Stonefountain. She doesn’t want me to fight Khalid. She’s begging me to flee to Navgarod and go into hiding there. The hot sun beat against his armor, drenching him in sweat. His robes were so much more comfortable. Perhaps he should go back to the palace and get some.

Bensharie flapped his wings and headed inland toward the palace. She mirrors your own doubts and desires. You’re afraid we can’t win, and you’ll be responsible for the deaths of everyone you love.

You know my heart better than anyone, Bensharie. Amar leaned his face against Bensharie’s hot neck. The smell of molten gold enfolded him.

That’s why I know we’re not going to the palace just to gather some better clothing.

Amar closed his eyes and let the ground speed by below him as Bensharie flew as smooth as a wisp of cloud on the wind. Do you think we can defeat Khalid, Bensharie?

Of course we can.
