Chapter Eleven
Oakley
I stared at the long mirror hanging from our closet door. I was examining the dark, worn blue jeans with skull patches and holes in the knees and my bare, hairless chest.
âI think they require shirts at The Spare Tire,â Pate suggested.
âI know. Iâm going to put on a shirt. Are these jeans too risky?â
âNo,â he replied, shaking his head. âYou donât change who you are for girls, so donât change for boys, either. Be you.â
I found a white T-shirt and pulled a black button-up shirt over it to dress myself up a little more. Jody was so stylish. I didnât want to embarrass him.
Pate put his book down and sat up on the bed. âIâve been dreading this, but I have to tell you something.â
âCanât we talk later?â I asked, dismissing him with my hand. âIâm trying to get ready. Iâm nervous enough as it is.â
âI accidently told Stormy that we dated,â he told me, squinting his eyes closed as if he could hide while he said it.
âThat who dated?â I was moussing my hair into a small mohawk.
âYou and me.â
âWhat!â My mouth dropped in horror.
âHe knows we had sex, too.â Pateâs eyes were still closed.
I hit Pate upside the head with my bundle of socks. âAre you fucking nuts!â
âIt just came out. It was an accident. He seemed cool with it.â Pate had opened his eyes now but was avoiding eye contact.
âSo, he knows youâre trans now?â Part of me was relieved that he outed himself as trans so that we could put that worry behind us.
âNo,â he responded. He laid back down on the bed. âJust that we dated and used to have sex.â
âAnd you thought he needed to know that information?â I stared at him with my eyes wide. I wanted to slap him. âDoes he think weâre gay now?â
âWell, I didnât know what to tell him, Oakley.â He sat up again. âI mean, youâre going out with a guy tonight. I didnât want to confuse him.â
I walked over to him. âYou told him that Iâm gay?â
He held up his hand. âNot exactly. I just told him that I didnât know if you were bi or gay or what. And I told him not to tell anyone.â
âIâm pretty sure heterosexuals donât just have random sex with dudes,â I argued, rolling my eyes.
âAre you saying that youâre not a heterosexual?â Pate inquired.
Ignoring the question, I stammered, âDamn it, Pate! What a fuckup!â I punched him in the side.
âIâm sorry!â he yelled, twisting his body away from me. âAnd maybe I do trust him. He didnât yell or beat me up.â
âWhatâd he do?â I asked.
âHe was very curious about it,â he told me with a puzzled look. âIt was a little weird. He didnât seem grossed out, though.â
I sank down into a desk chair to put on my shoes. âCurious?â
Pate shrugged. âHe wanted to know what it was like and if we had sex.â
âWhy the fuck would he want to know that?â I asked, throwing my arms up in the air.
