Chapter Eleven

Oakley

I stared at the long mirror hanging from our closet door. I was examining the dark, worn blue jeans with skull patches and holes in the knees and my bare, hairless chest.

“I think they require shirts at The Spare Tire,” Pate suggested.

“I know. I’m going to put on a shirt. Are these jeans too risky?”

“No,” he replied, shaking his head. “You don’t change who you are for girls, so don’t change for boys, either. Be you.”

I found a white T-shirt and pulled a black button-up shirt over it to dress myself up a little more. Jody was so stylish. I didn’t want to embarrass him.

Pate put his book down and sat up on the bed. “I’ve been dreading this, but I have to tell you something.”

“Can’t we talk later?” I asked, dismissing him with my hand. “I’m trying to get ready. I’m nervous enough as it is.”

“I accidently told Stormy that we dated,” he told me, squinting his eyes closed as if he could hide while he said it.

“That who dated?” I was moussing my hair into a small mohawk.

“You and me.”

“What!” My mouth dropped in horror.

“He knows we had sex, too.” Pate’s eyes were still closed.

I hit Pate upside the head with my bundle of socks. “Are you fucking nuts!”

“It just came out. It was an accident. He seemed cool with it.” Pate had opened his eyes now but was avoiding eye contact.

“So, he knows you’re trans now?” Part of me was relieved that he outed himself as trans so that we could put that worry behind us.

“No,” he responded. He laid back down on the bed. “Just that we dated and used to have sex.”

“And you thought he needed to know that information?” I stared at him with my eyes wide. I wanted to slap him. “Does he think we’re gay now?”

“Well, I didn’t know what to tell him, Oakley.” He sat up again. “I mean, you’re going out with a guy tonight. I didn’t want to confuse him.”

I walked over to him. “You told him that I’m gay?”

He held up his hand. “Not exactly. I just told him that I didn’t know if you were bi or gay or what. And I told him not to tell anyone.”

“I’m pretty sure heterosexuals don’t just have random sex with dudes,” I argued, rolling my eyes.

“Are you saying that you’re not a heterosexual?” Pate inquired.

Ignoring the question, I stammered, “Damn it, Pate! What a fuckup!” I punched him in the side.

“I’m sorry!” he yelled, twisting his body away from me. “And maybe I do trust him. He didn’t yell or beat me up.”

“What’d he do?” I asked.

“He was very curious about it,” he told me with a puzzled look. “It was a little weird. He didn’t seem grossed out, though.”

I sank down into a desk chair to put on my shoes. “Curious?”

Pate shrugged. “He wanted to know what it was like and if we had sex.”

“Why the fuck would he want to know that?” I asked, throwing my arms up in the air.
