V iolet’s fever was worsening and she was shaking uncontrollably, moaning, and writhing in pain. They felt so helpless. There was nothing that any of them could do to change the outcome. All they could do was sit, wait, and keep watch over her. Burying his head in his hands, Tyson felt consumed with guilt. Guilt over time wasted away from her and for not realizing sooner that she was everything to him. Now it was too late.

“Son, why don’t you get some rest; I can keep an eye on her for a while,” Duke suggested softly.

Tyson looked up at the older man and saw the sincerity and kindness in the man’s eyes. Still, despite the offer, Tyson knew he wouldn’t be able to rest. He couldn’t leave her. He wouldn’t. “Thanks Duke, but I’m not going anywhere.”

Duke nodded in understanding, stood up and joined Kelly and Sam on the other side of the room.

Pulling Violet into his lap, Tyson held her close. Gently stroking her hair, he silently prayed she would open her eyes, if only once more before the inevitable happened.

“Tyson?” Sam returned to his side and knelt beside him. “Do you want one of us to do it...when it’s time?”

“No!” he snapped. “No one touches her except for me.”

“Okay,” she said softly. “We just thought it may not be best if you’re the one to do it.”

“Thank you, Sam. But this is on me, and I need to be the one to end it for her when the time comes.”

Sam nodded before standing.

Tyson was acutely aware of his three companions hovering nearby, each one at hand should he not be able to handle it. He wasn’t afraid to pull the trigger; not on the undead. However, he was afraid that once Violet died, he would still consider her ‘her’ after she came back. Unfortunately, that was something he would have to face when the time came.

“Ty––” Violet mumbled, her eyelids flickering open.

“Violet––sweetheart, I’m here,” he said, stroking her cheek.

“It hurts,” she groaned.

“I know, but I’ve got you,” Tyson’s voice cracked as he fought to hold back the tears.

“Please make it stop,” Violet begged, her body shaking even more now.

“I don’t know what to do, Vi.”

“Please...end it––”

“No!” Tyson cried. “Don’t ask me to do that. Not while you’re still you.”

“Ty, please...I can’t take it. I need you to do it.”

“Vi––”

“Ty, I love you,” she whispered.

Those words were music to his ears. Yet, those same words shattered his heart and world into a million pieces. “I love you too, sweetheart,” Tyson said, choking back a sob.

“Promise me you’ll do it.”

“I promise.”

“Grace and I will be waiting for you, Ty,” Violet whispered before losing consciousness once again.

Tyson pulled Violet into his arms one last time, inhaling the scent of her skin, feeling her heart beating in time with his. Kissing her tenderly, his lips left their mark on her forehead. The fever had claimed her, and it was time.

“Forgive me, my love,” Tyson whispered as he pressed the gun to her temple and pulled the trigger.
