I sat and tried to still my thoughts as my uncle moved toward me out of the shadows. His face was covered in mud; what I could see of it looked troubled.

“What do you think of what you just saw?” he asked me.

“I have no idea,” I replied, “it certainly doesn’t fit in with the other tapes at all. What have you been up to that’s made you look like a crazy man?”

“One of the guys found something interesting over there in that trench. Go see for yourself.”

I walked over and couldn’t see a thing. There was a deep furrow in the rocky floor and at its bottom there was a crack in the surface, about the size of my body. My uncle joined me with the Sunglasses Kid and a few of the other guys. “Get in there,” he ordered them, beckoning toward the fissure.

Then he shook his head. “Forget it. I’m going in myself and I’ll take Four-eyes here with me. Lower us down on this rope.”

As he and the Sunglasses Kid moved into the furrow, I grabbed Uncle Three by the arm. “You’re going to run into snakes in there and when you do, that crack is too narrow to allow you an escape route. Can’t you wait till daybreak?”

“As if daybreak’s going to make a difference in this dark hole,” my uncle scoffed. “We have our flashlights—don’t be such a coward.”

“Send some young guys in. Your old bones are in no condition to show off, damn it.”

“I can take care of myself—I’ve been doing this long before you were born. I’m just going to take a look. I’ll be right back up in just a few minutes.”

He tossed a sulfur smoke bomb down into the bottom of the trench and grabbed two more, handing one to the Sunglasses Kid. The other guys lowered the rope and the two of them slid down through the narrow opening into the darkness. Soon they reached the bottom and stood beside the fissure, peering into it with their flashlights.
