Mother of Darkness

“Tell your detective to leave, dear. We cannot have a good chat with the muscle listening in on us,” the woman said lazily, regarding Emerson with passive disdain.

“I am not going anywhere,” he answered bravely.

Jensen studied the new arrival. Her porcelain features were completely unravaged by the mark of either age or joy, kept smooth by the glacial contempt she held toward others. To Jensen, she appeared like a wild tempest personified, with black hair exploding in wild rivulets all around her face like a dark mane, streaked with the flash of silver. She surmised quickly that the woman was not about to waste time on the triviality of compromise. With a heavy conscience, she turned to her friend and looked him in the eye. “Emerson—”

“No! Jensen, I’m not leaving. I don’t trust her!”

“Neither do I,” Jensen agreed without attempting to hide her voice, “but we don’t have much time. Let me speak to her. We need to get closer to the truth before it’s too late.”

Emerson pursed his lips and tensed his jaw, trying to hold back his frustration. Jensen felt for him. He was always being excluded. Always being pushed aside, and yet he had been the fulcrum upon which they had devised their answers to the swelling mystery. He looked from one woman to the other, and then nodded. Turning on his heel, he whispered, “Call me when you need me,” in an almost detached manner. Then, he walked away.

When he was out of earshot, the woman was the first to speak. “You are quite the fiery neophyte, aren’t you? It’s extraordinary—to have bloomed so late, yet so beautifully. If only your potential wasn’t bound by the delusion of your coven.”

“What do you know of my coven, or even what I am capable of? More importantly, who the hell are you to make such claims?”

“Elsie Turner. Trust me when I tell you that your coven knows exactly who I am. Their actions are not unknown to any of us. I am aware of the saga variables and who holds the power as opposed to those who are influenced. You won’t stop us, Jensen Mills, even though I sense your fervent desire to do so. The blood spell will be cast, and with it, I will reclaim what is lost. I will reclaim what has been wrongfully taken from me.”

“Your entitlement to power will be the end of you—of all of our kind! You don’t know what you are doing, Elsie.”

“Power?” she scoffed. “You think I am driven by power? I do not care for the little magic of other witches. My intentions are fueled solely in restoring my family…massacred before they were granted the opportunity to reshape the world upon which our culture is built.”

“Why do all of this then? Why not just bring back your family?”

Elsie laughed hysterically. “A reanimation of that kind of power, only to trap them in the rotting vessels left behind in this world? I think not. Their physical forms will only limit them.
