Chapter 10

We hurried straight to Uncle Joey’s office and told him everything that had happened. His lips twisted, and he shook his head. “So Dagger killed him?”

“Yeah.” I let out a breath. “We got there too late.”

“Damn.” Uncle Joey thought our timing was awful. He glanced at Ramos. “And he got away?”

“Yes. I tried to catch him, but he disappeared on one of the upper floors, and I wasn’t sure which one. Since I’d left Shelby behind unprotected, I decided to go back. I found her in Cal’s apartment. By then, Cal was dead.”

Uncle Joey glanced my way. “How about you? You see anything else?”

“Uh… well, if you count Dagger, I got a pretty good look at him. Maybe that’s why he came after me. So what happens next?”

Uncle Joey let out a breath. “We need to stop him from burning down the club. Cal said it was tomorrow night?”

“Yes. But do you think he’ll go through with it now that he knows we know?”

“But does he know we know?” Uncle Joey asked. “Dagger may not have seen you there the first time.”

“Oh, that’s right.”

“Either way,” Ramos said. “We should head to the club and talk to Russ. He can help us come up with a plan for tomorrow night.”

Uncle Joey checked the time. “We can go now. There won’t be as many workers there yet, so we can talk freely and take a look around.”

The Scooby Doo ringtone sounded from my phone, and I froze. Was it about Cal’s murder, and somehow Dimples knew I was involved? Was he calling to tell me to turn myself in?

Ramos motioned toward my purse. “Don’t look so guilty. Just answer the phone.”

I nodded, taking a deep breath to calm down. “Hey Dimples. What’s up?”

“Hey, I just wanted you to know that I got a prosecuting attorney to help with the case. When I told him that Wade Keller is our prime murder suspect, he was more than happy to get the paperwork ready to keep him in jail. There’s only one problem.”

“What’s that?”

“We don’t have much of a window. Keller’s supposed to be released at the end of next week, but it’s been moved up a few days, so we only have until he’s released Wednesday afternoon. But it should still work out, as long as Danny agrees to testify.”

“Oh crap. Let’s hope he does.”

“No kidding. Hey… I’m here at a homicide in an apartment building and wondered if you could help me out. No one we’ve questioned is willing to talk to us. It’s like they’re afraid of something. There’s a lot of gang activity in this neighborhood, and especially this building, so that’s probably it, but if you were here, you’d know what they’re keeping quiet about. Could you come by?”

I swallowed. “Uh… I’m right in the middle of a meeting with a client, but maybe after that?”

“Okay… sure. We’ll be here for a while. Text me when you’re done.”

“Will do. Bye.” I disconnected and slumped in my chair.

“Everything okay?” Ramos asked.
