5.2 Drawing in Design Process

According to the most widespread traditional conception, drawing would simply be a method of representation, but if its role were limited to this it would be easily supplanted today by new digital methodologies. Less is, instead, the awareness of how much is able to translate into signs the language of visual and creative thought: a real method of thinking (Brown 2008). Drawing is, therefore, a means, an instrument of thought, and not its finality (Dee 2008).

Drawing, especially designing to design, is a type of modelling that, as cognitivist psychology teaches us today, poses a series of questions that are anything but simple. Why drawing to design manifests itself at the same time as drawing during designing and designing during designing. It is this interacting co-presence between the medium (drawing) and the aim (designing) that allows us to advance towards the solution sought and sometimes only found (Maldonado 2005) (Fig. 5.1).
