Chapter 26

WITH Kris’ plight overwhelming his thoughts, Dan was having difficulty concentrating on his task in Granite County. Dan was an uncle but not a father. He tried to imagine the agony Kris was experiencing and it made him sick. Was Carter dead or alive? If he was dead, how did he die? Did the thieves dump him alive on the side of the road, frightened, crying, hungry and exposed to weather, wild animals and insects? If they still possessed him, why, and how were they treating him? Was he clean, being fed properly, being changed regularly and sleeping in appropriate bedding? Then there was the second-to-second torture of missing Carter, agonizing over the general uncertainty of the situation. Would they ever see Carter again, dead or alive? Dan thought of parents who agonized for years over a missing child without any resolution. How could they live with that?

Dan wanted to say something comforting to his friend, but he couldn’t think of anything. He could offer the standard everything will be fine but that sounded so hollow, so fake, because he could not say that with enough conviction to make Kris believe it. Dan did find solace in this: he didn’t know anything about the Shrimpers Bay Police Department, but he assumed they were good at their job. Beyond that, Dan knew Kris was great at his job. He was a relentless investigative reporter. If anyone could solve Carter’s abduction, it was Kris who would not sit back idly waiting on the police.

Sitting at his desk in his home office, Dan slapped himself in the face. Sitting here worrying isn’t doing anyone any good. It’s time to go to work Dan said to himself. There were still questions about Adam Carter to be answered. Thus far, no one had provided any clarity. Not Adam’s parents, not his brother, not his high school football coach, not the friend with the supposed drug problem, not the local sheriff who, with a shrug of his shoulders, said Adam’s death was an accident.

Adam’s parents had asked Dan and Kris to discover why Adam was at the river and how he got there. With Kris involved in another serious, more personal matter hundreds of miles away, it was going to be up to Dan and Detective Fleming to provide answers for the Carsons. Two more people were on the list to be interviewed - the jealous teammate and the ex-girlfriend. Dan was going to take the teammate and Fleming was going to take the ex-girlfriend.

As Kris had done with Tony Palmer, Dan sought permission from Coach Hannigan to talk to Casey Albertson, who had replaced Adam as starting quarterback. Reluctantly, Coach allowed the talk, but made it clear this would be the last player Dan, Kris or anyone else would interview. He said it was time to let Adam rest in peace and that the ongoing questions and intrusions had become a distraction. Coach warned Dan that he would not be talking just to Casey. His father Todd would be present, and as Coach described him, “he’s a piece of work.
