Chapter 6

Andy

I was glad that I could spend time with Ethan as just friends again. It was going to be difficult to not think about him sexually, so I ramped up my search to find a girlfriend after we talked in the café. I created profiles on three dating apps and started swiping away.

It took a couple of days for me to match with someone I would actually want to spend time with. This first match was with a Bowington State University sophomore, Maggie. She majored in chemistry. I liked her profile for a couple of reasons. She was attractive. She had curly brown hair and soft green eyes. A lot of the other girls had pictures of themselves partying as their profile pictures, but not Maggie. She looked intelligent and her profile picture was of her wearing a white lab coat standing near some lab equipment. She agreed to meet me for a coffee on campus.

I was nervous when I walked over to the library to meet my date. I got the impression that she was nice from our brief chat online, but this was my first date with a girl. At 22 I had never been out with a girl. I thought back to my first date with Jacob. We met through a gay dating app that was designed more for hookups than actual dates. I met him at his place and we watched a movie. We didn’t make much small talk and he quickly made the first move. My date with Maggie was going to be obviously different. What should I say? What should I ask her? I was a fish out of water.

I tried to get to the library’s café a few minutes early, but when I walked in I saw her sitting at a table behind her laptop near the back of the room. She had a coffee cup nearby, so I figured she had already ordered. I ordered my coffee from the barista, and after it was ready walked back to meet her.

“You’re Maggie, right?” I asked awkwardly.

“Yup,” she said barely looking up from her laptop.

“I-I’m Andy.” I am sure she could hear the nerves in my voice.

“Oh!” She said sounding surprised and closed her laptop. “Sorry, I was busy finishing up a lab report. I thought I would have been done before you got here.”

“I don’t mean to distract you from your work. We can reschedule if you want.”

“No, no. It’s totally fine. I can finish later. Take a seat. Did you already order?”

“Yeah, I’ve got my coffee right here,” I said as I lifted up my cup.

“Oh, alright. I guess I can get my own.” Her tone sounded aggravated.

“I thought you already had a coffee. I saw the cup on the table. I can go back up and get you one if you want.”

“I’ll just get my own.” She got up and walked to the counter to order a drink. I sat at the table with her things awkwardly as I waited for her to return.
