Daniel

"Welcome to Icarus Station, Mr. Koffman."

Daniel stood with Edward Bordeaux at the entrance to a skyscraper centrally located within the gene-splicer compound. The building's central tower was one of the tallest structures in all the subcities at one hundred eleven stories, and it had wings half that height flanking it on three sides. The whole structure was a monstrous achievement of glass and steel.

True to his word, Doctor Rozenkranz had given Daniel paid time off to tour the splicer facility and so, out of excuses, he had agreed to go. They had already traversed a wide lawn riding in an electric vehicle of which there seemed to be several parked in front of any given building. They had no doors, only thin roofs, and seemed to have no security associated with them despite the fact that the compound they were visiting was in Oolytau. The whole place was like an oasis plucked from one of the better off subcities and dropped where it should not be.

Nevertheless, Daniel doubted the splicers had any problem with crime. They had a reputation most syndicates could only envy.

"Icarus?" Daniel asked as he followed Bordeaux through doors that opened with a pneumatic hiss at their approach.

"Like almost every genetic research facility across the planet, this one is named after an old legend — one lost to the Cataclysm. Should you join us, we'll be able to fill you in on the history behind the name. Suffice to say it is apt. This way."

As he fell into step, Daniel found himself in an atrium so high looking straight up made him dizzy. The various floors were connected via a central conduit and skybridges. It wasn't quite noon, but natural light was spilling in from all sides. He'd expected to get hit with a blast of cold air when he stepped into the building but instead the temperature was warm, just short of hot, and more humid than he'd expected, which only made sense when he realized there was greenery everywhere.

"You must have an army of gardeners taking care of this place," Daniel noted as they crossed a lobby floored in natural stone and broken up by babbling brooks and small trees clinging to moss-covered rocks.

"You would be surprised," Edward said as he came to an archway that led from the almost entirely natural atrium to an entirely artificial set of elevators. "When an ecosystem is properly balanced, the maintenance required is only that which allows intruders to make use of it."

Daniel glanced around, spotted a bot not unlike the cigarette eater he'd seen in Rectau, and pointed at it as he said, "So what you really mean is, you use drones for that stuff."

Edward's smile was easy if a bit wry as he said, "I didn't say there was no maintenance required. Drones manage virtually all of it."

"How many actual people live and work here?" Daniel asked as he watched his guide move to stand near an elevator door, which opened at his approach.

Edward said, "Very few.
