B Is for Behavior

In the case of Devin, the behavior was pretty easily identified: Devin attempted to poke his baby brother with a screw driver. It is critical for us to train our brains to get specific when we describe the problem behavior. The reason it is critical is because we have to attempt to replace that negative behavior with a positive one. In the case of Devin, we worked with his speech therapist to build a communication board. (Communication boards are low tech but highly effective tools that utilize pictures to communicate common wants and needs of a child.) When we know what we don’t want to see, we get a better idea of what we want to see. In this case, we didn’t want to see Devin hurt his baby brother when he got frustrated. We did want Devin to ask for help when he’s frustrated. Once we introduced the communication board, Devin’s frustrations decreased dramatically.
