CHAPTER 14

Mina pushed the baking sheet loaded with biscuits into the oven, then set the timer for fifteen minutes. A chime for a text message had her reaching for her phone. Unfortunately, Olivia’s daughter had a stomach bug. Instead of talking tonight, they’d meet tomorrow morning.

Busy day. First Janice at the IGA. Next, the chief and Nosey. Then Larry, a quick talk to Olivia, a trip to Eastland, Jake’s little league practice, and tonight, Garrett’s parents were to join them for dinner. Currently, Robert and Irene hung out with their son and grandson on the porte cochere patio.

While they were occupied, she could take a quick look at the wills to see what might’ve stirred Jesse Turner to assault Larry. They’d been bugging her all afternoon, but there hadn’t been time to look through the pages.

She pulled the sheets she’d tri-folded from her purse, spread them out on the island’s counter, and began to scan the documents. The one dated earliest, fifteen years prior, would be a good place to start. Short and sweet, the will left everything to Jesse Turner upon Melissa Turner’s death, including her ‘separate property’ in Pecos County and ‘any royalties derived therefrom.’ Royalties?

The screen door slapped shut, and Irene walked in before Mina had a chance to pick up and put away the documents.

“We were having such a good time out there, and then I realized you were still in here. Can I help with anything?” Her gaze fell to the papers spread on the counter and she lifted her blue-irised gaze back to Mina with a question in them.

Since no one had ever called Irene stupid, Mina didn’t even try fobbing off the papers as anything other than what they were. “Nosey Turner’s wills.”

“Melissa Turner had multiple wills? And you have them?” Her mother-in-law’s eyes widened.

“Two, to my knowledge. And copies, of course.”

Irene set her wine glass on the marble then folded her arms across her bright fuchsia t-shirt, the one which read in classy, white, brush script, ‘My heart says chocolate and wine, but my jeans say for the love of God woman, eat a salad!’ Dark brows peppered with hints of gray pulled together and she placed a hand on one hip. “Why would you have Melissa’s wills? Oh no. Are you investigating again?”

Mina should’ve known this would be her reaction. Irene had never been Mina’s number one fan. Not a monster-in-law, exactly. The older woman had definite—definite old-school—ideas about what types of activities a woman should engage in. Mina told her months ago about her rediscovery of being able to see ghosts. The concept didn’t quite fit into Irene’s way of how the world works. She’d never been outright rude, but never quite accepting either. She usually changed the topic or left the room if Mina’s Flannigan Gift came up.

“Not investigating. That’s for the police.” Mina started to gather the papers.

“Wait.” Irene put her hand on one of the sheets. “Where’d you get them?”

Interesting. Irene had never been one for gossip, let alone ‘investigating.
