Gordon was already at the lab that evening when Dana arrived. He was waiting in the control room where he’d stood just a day earlier. Two folded boxes of Chinese takeout steamed on the desk by the monitors. Dana took off her raincoat and hung it from a peg behind the door. She was dressed in a linen skirt, striped tank-top, and purple rain boots. Gordon couldn’t help but smile. He’d never seen her wearing anything but her police uniform. Just seeing her dressed like a normal person, he felt as though Dana had let him in on a secret, as if he’d earned the right to see her as something other than the authority figure she was day in and day out on the beat.

“You look great,” Gordon said. “We should be out along the harbor. Someplace hip. Not in this old block of concrete.”

Dana waved him off but smirked in a way that let Gordon know she pretty much agreed with him. “Is that from Great Wall?” She pointed at the food.

“You know it. Crab Rangoons in the bag there, too.”

“Nice. I love Great Wall.”

“I wanted to bring wine. But you’ve got to stay awake for a while.”

“Don’t worry about it. I’m going through a beer phase anyway.”

“Well, I’ve got Cokes. Coke is like beer for kids. It’s close.”

Dana snickered. “Where is the kid? Ethan?”

Gordon took a deep breath and sat on the desk and was suddenly absorbed in the food. He popped open his box of General Tso’s chicken and doled out a generous glob onto a paper plate. “He’s not coming today,” Gordon said quickly. Then he took a big bite of crab Rangoon.

Dana crossed her arms. “Okaaay,” she said. “So you really do think this place is a romantic first date then, huh? Maybe you need your own head examined.”

“I think you’re right on the money, there, but no, I need your help still. We’re using the lab, but the patient is going to be me.”

Dana stared at Gordon in silence for ten seconds while he crunched his crab Rangoon through puffed cheeks. Then she cleared her throat. “All right, Gordon. Enough bullshit. What is going on here?”

“Here,” Gordon said, handing her a carton of Chinese food and offering her a seat in the swivel chair before sitting down himself on the same bench where Jane and Andrew Barret had sat last. “It’s spicy beef lo mein. Their beef lo mein is a minor miracle. It makes everything easier to take.”

Dana took the carton and started eating straight from it with a plastic fork. She paused after the first bite, looked down, and nodded in grudging approval. Then she crossed her legs, chewed, and waited.

“OK, so you know how I said Ethan Barret and Erica Denbrook were having the same dream?” Gordon asked. “And how I said I’m getting calls now, from other parents, worried because their own kids are sleepwalking? And how I told you I think all of these kids are having the
