The newfound hope that Professor Dragan’s plan instilled in me added an extra layer of spice to the meal she had prepared. The jambalaya was a wonderful symphony of tastes—the spiciness of the sausage was perfectly balanced against the sweetness of the tomatoes and the subtle heat of the spices. The cornbread, golden and buttery, crumbled delightfully with each bite, complementing the rich and hearty jambalaya.

“Professor, this is so good,” I said as polished off my cornbread.

“Thank you,” she beamed. She reached over and clasped Valentin’s hand, gazing at him lovingly. “We haven’t had many dinner guests except for Valentin’s brother Dimitri and the Easteys.”

“Well, this is a nice change,” Twyla said. “I haven’t had NOLA cuisine for a while. My cousins live in the area and I haven’t visited for a while. I miss the spiciness of the food.”

Valentin’s eyes grew dreamy and he took a deep breath. “I do, too. Boston clam chowder is great and all, but I do miss New Orleans and its spicy food sometimes.” Something in his voice made me think he didn’t get there very often.

Professor Dragan leaned in and kissed his hand in a small gesture of comfort. “But we’ve made a great home here.”

Valentin’s face softened as he gazed at her lovingly. “True. Wherever you are is home for me.”

Their boundless love for each other was something I didn’t think I’d ever experience. Mom hadn’t dated anyone after Dad left and I always got the feeling she kept carrying a torch for him—something I totally didn’t understand.

I finished off the collards on my plate. They had been simmered to tender perfection, with hints of garlic and a touch of smokiness, while the fluffy rice served as the perfect base underneath to soak up the flavorsome juices. The comforting combination of dishes danced on my tongue.

Kamaron blotted his lips with his napkin. “Hey, I have a NOLA joke.”

“Another joke?,” Twyla said, playfully rolling her eyes. But I could see the admiration in her gaze. She’d fallen hard for this guy.

“Always,” he replied, flashing her a mischievous grin. “Why won’t an alligator attack you in New Orleans? Because they have too much respect for ‘ba-YOU’!”

We groaned and chuckled at Kamaron’s truly awful pun. But for the first time in a long while, I felt completely relaxed and safe.

The high priestess might know I was here with the Dragans, but she couldn’t keep us all from enjoying each other’s company.

The laughter and clatter of dishes filled Rose's kitchen as we savored the jambalaya. Kamaron's light-hearted joke about New Orleans alligators brought a momentary relief from the day's stress, reminding me of the value of camaraderie in tough times.

The High Priestess might know I’m here, but she couldn’t keep us from enjoying each other’s company.

About an hour after the meal, the three of us left with the professor and her husband, insisting that we join them again.

“God, I’m stuffed,” Kamaron said as we crossed the courtyard, rubbing his belly.

“Same. She’s a wonderful cook,” Twyla agreed.
