CHAPTER SEVENTEEN

I stared at the closed door, wondering if Professor Eastey really was going to check on Mom or if he was just telling me what he thought I wanted to hear.

“You know the professor’s right,” Finn said. “To survive in this world, you’ve got to learn to trust people.”

I slowly cocked my eyebrow. “Do you?”

“Yeah, I do. Kamaron and—” He stopped, as if he didn’t want to mention the name.

My eyebrows slammed together, and my mouth twisted into a sour expression. “Were you going to say Jaxon Reyes?” My tone turned venomous.

Finn locked eyes with me, his gaze unwavering. “He’s the only guy in this place that’s always had my back, and Kamaron’s.”

I gave him a sarcastic smile. “A proper Three Musketeers.”

“Maybe. Jaxon always said we’re all for one and one for all, united we stand, divided we fall. We’d always been super close until…” His voice trailed off.

“Until me?” I asked softly.

Finn pressed his forehead against the rain-streaked window, lost in thought. “I’ve got to go.” He stole a quick glance at Twyla, who was sitting next to me with a look of determined resolve on her face. “You’ll take care of her?”

Twyla nodded once. “Of course.”

There was a moment of stillness as Finn got ready to leave. His hand lingered on the doorknob, as if he had more to say but couldn’t find the words. Then, with only a mumbled goodbye, he disappeared through the door and down the hallway.

As the sound of his footsteps receded into silence, a sense of unease settled over me like a thick fog. I exchanged a worried glance with Twyla.

She got up and headed toward the bathroom. “I have someone who has been anxious to see you.”

My heart sank. Not another interrogation. But when Twyla opened the door, Midnight raced in and bounded onto the bed, with an intense curiosity glistening in her dark brown eyes.

“Midnight.” I rubbed her sweet furry face with my palms and my uneasiness vanished as if by magic. “Hey, little buddy.”

Midnight panted happily and curled up next to me.

I stifled a yawn, my jaw popping with the effort. “I hear you, girl. I’m tired too.” I stared glumly at the metal bracelets around my wrists that bound a power I never asked for and couldn’t control no matter how hard I tried.

Twyla’s gaze was sympathetic as she studied me. “You look exhausted,” she murmured, brushing a stray strand of her blonde hair behind her ear. “Tomorrow is going to be a big day. You should get some sleep.”

I sighed, shifting uncomfortably. “I’m almost afraid to go to sleep though. What if I dream of the Bloodborne Brotherhood again?”

Twyla thought for a moment, then her lips curled into a smile. “I have something that might help. My mom used to make it for me when I had nightmares.” She moved gracefully toward her dresser, the scent of lavender wafting subtly behind her. She opened a drawer, revealing a neatly organized assortment of small pouches, vials, and crystals.

With practiced hands, she selected several bags of dried herbs.
