TWENTY-EIGHT

I was gaining a new appreciation for Cavallo's life as a single parent and full-time chauffeur. But I didn't mind helping out. After the kids had wandered off on their way to catch the early show, I sat on a bench and called Danny. He picked up, sounding groggy, and I hoped it was because he had continued to take his medication. “Have you had dinner yet?” I asked.

“What time is it?” he groaned.

“Shortly after six. Jaime phoned me for a ride to the mall, and now she's going to a movie with five other friends. I assume that's OK with you.”

“Sure.” He yawned. “Thanks. Did I hear you mention dinner?”

“I happen to be standing outside the new steakhouse at the mall. Are you interested?”

“The pair of you will have to stop calling me a moose. I'm a carnivore. How soon can you get here with the red meat?”

“Shouldn't be long. I already ordered it. I knew you wouldn't say no. See you shortly.”

“I’ll make a salad.”

Dinner was delicious, and I would have no trouble recommending the new restaurant. Cavallo glowered when I asked him if he wanted me to cut up his food. “I can't wait to start my physical therapy. I should be getting the OK in a day or two. I think I can handle eating a steak on my own.”

“Fine. Just checking.”

After a minute, he said, “Sorry. I’m impatient and bored. What’s new at work?”

“You haven’t seen Missy’s show?”

He rolled his eyes. “I’ve been too busy.”

I giggled. Cavallo didn’t have much patience for the ‘Missy McLaren Today’ show, even when he was feeling one hundred percent. While we finished up the last of the salad and then sat in the living room to drink our coffee, I regaled him with an account of the events at the community medical clinic.

Cavallo shook his head in disbelief. “I hope you ended up getting the Flores documents, too. That’s outstanding, Holly. And the place was full of hidden cameras?”

“Yes. It’s totally nauseating to think of what Alan Barber did. Sex Crimes is going to be occupied for months on that one. And I heard a lawyer from a big downtown firm wants to start a class action suit, to try to identify all the victims and go after Barber for compensation.”

We chatted about that case for a while, which in turn led us to the tragic loss of Brad Reynolds. I kept all my theories to myself and just nodded in agreement when Danny zeroed in on a narcotics connection.

After a while, I checked my phone. “Time to get out to the mall. See you in a few minutes.”

“Thanks again for your help with the taxi service.”

As I had predicted, the parking lot at the mall was crazy, especially at the entrance closest to the movie theaters. I crept slowly up and down several aisles, and then stepped on the brakes when two older women walked up to the trunk of a blue Cruze, deposited their shopping, and then got in the car.
