Once again, Cavallo took the lead. He said, âThank you for seeing us, SarahBeth. Iâm Detective Cavallo and this is Detective Constable Towns.â
I thought for a moment that she reacted at my name, the same sort of flicker Iâd sensed from her mother, but she glanced away and returned Dannyâs smile. âNo problem.â
âWe understand from your father that you and some friends were at the Calais Club last Thursday night.â
âYes, thatâs right.â
âWeâre interviewing everyone we can find who was in the area. We have Mr. Reidâs reservation list, and of course the info on the staff who were working. We were wondering if we could have the names of the people in your party?â
âAre they in trouble?â
âNo, not at all. Weâre searching for witnesses.â
âI donât think they saw anything.â
Cavallo just let that hang there. The silence worked, and she said, âFine.â And rhymed off five names, which I duly noted.
I gave SarahBeth my most innocent smile and said, âOh? We thought Stefan was with you. Or, maybe he was with his own friends?â
She shook her head. âNo. You must be mistaken. He drove me from here to the parking lot at the end of the Esplanade, but then he went home. He didnât come with me. And my friends drove me home.â
âPerfect,â I said. âThanks.â
Cavallo continued, âNow. Thinking back to that night, did you see anything or anyone that seemed out of place?â
âNo. Not that I remember. The restaurant was the same as usual. Later, we went out onto the beach. It was so warm that night. We had a blast.â
âWell, if you think of anything at all, can you give us a call?â
âSure.â
At that moment, Susana came in with what looked like homemade lemonade and some large blueberry muffins. I thought it would be rude not to try everything. Since it appeared that I was going to miss lunch.
We made small talk, had our snacks, and then headed out the front door and across the expansive parking area to the three-car garage. Looking up at the apartment, I said, âThis place looks bigger than my condo.â
âHome sweet home. That was good fishing back there, by the way. Weâre one step ahead of the game with this guy. SarahBeth put him on the scene. A bit early, but still.â
We went to the apartment entrance, and I rang the bell. This time, a normal chime sounded, but there was no answer. I figured Stefan was home because I could hear music. The only question was whether heâd hear the doorbell over the bass. After a couple of minutes, I pushed it again. I heard footsteps thumping down the stairs, and a young man, who was obviously SarahBethâs brother, flung the door open. Like her, he was tall and thin with black hair. But while SarahBeth had looked happy, tanned, and healthy, Stefan looked rough. Really rough. His eyes were red, and by the smell of him, he hadnât had a shower. He was wearing an orange basketball jersey and black shorts, but he was thin to the point of looking unhealthy.
