“I came to play,” said Tajima overcome by horror then in a voice mimicking Kinuko's rasp said, “but maybe I'll come back some other time.”

“You have an ulterior motive. You didn't just happen to be in this neighborhood.”

“No, today, I actually...”

“Come on, come clean. You're a little too soft.”

Nonetheless, that room was horrible.

Tajima thought, “Do we have to drink the whiskey here? Aah, I should have bought a cheaper brand.”

“I'm not soft. I'm clean. You're dirtier than usual today, aren't you?” he asked disgusted.

“Today, I had to carry a load that was a bit heavy, so I'm beat. I'm gonna take a nap now. You've got some good stuff there. Why don't you rent a room? A cheap one.”

She was talking about business. If making a profit was possible, the filth of that room was not a problem. Tajima took off his shoes and chose a relatively safe place on the tatami mats, and sat cross-legged, leaving his coat on.

“Do you like karasumi? We'll have it with our drinks,” she said.
