Mark had gone by the time he brought down the steel door shutter and had checked each of the ones protecting the windows. He gave the now heavily barricaded shop one last look and then noted the few shoppers walking the pavements, most still scurrying around desperate to get last minute Christmas presents.

As he made for the rear of the shops to look for his car, he suddenly felt a sense of loss. To be alone at Christmas needed a high degree of resilience and self-reliance; they were the things that precluded loneliness when one was confined to a big house with lots of heartbreaking reminders and memories. In terms of resilience and self–reliance, he just hoped he had enough.
