igot up early for round two with Tony. I stopped at Roasters before going to the apartment building and ordered two cups of coffee. The morning staff didn’t recognize Lily’s or Franklin’s picture and none had been working that Friday night.
Annie had emailed me Franklin’s picture and email address last night. She responded to my email regarding more information on him curtly. She hadn’t heard from Franklin since the date. His profile on the ‘Journey to Love’ website was no longer posted. She couldn’t remember anything specific about him. I sent an email to him but had not received anything back yet.
After I entered Lily’s building, I stopped. I stood in the lobby and tried to see it like Lily would. If she entered through the front door, the two elevators where fifteen feet away. The lobby was relatively narrow. A mirror hung on the left wall; I guessed to make the area feel bigger. When she entered through the front door, she would only be able to see the elevators. She wouldn’t be able to see Tony’s office, which was off to the right; the mailboxes, which were to the left; or the two exits to the garage and staircases, which were around the corner from each elevator.
Someone could have waited for her on either side and taken her by surprise. I hoped the video cameras provided views of the three entries.
I was sitting in the lobby when Tony got off the elevator and unlocked his office. I gave him a couple minutes to settle in before disturbing him.
“Hi again, Tony. Got you some coffee.” As Steve had pointed out, I had no jurisdiction. If Tony told me to leave, I had no recourse.
Tony was sitting at his desk and looked up. “Thanks,” he said as he accepted the coffee. “Sorry about the other day. I’m a little stressed with Franco out sick.” I sat down in the chair against the wall as he took a sip. He looked at the cup. “This is good. I don’t think I’ve ever had Roasters’ coffee. Franco went there most days. He always offered to get me some. I always declined.” He looked around the mess of his office. “Don’t know what I’m going to do if he doesn’t get better soon. The flu is brutal this year.”
We sat and drank our coffees. I didn’t want to push on the videos right away. I bought myself some time. I pulled out the picture of Franklin. “You recognize this guy?”
Tony pulled his glasses out of his pocket. He looked at it intently. Handing the picture back, he said, “No, sorry. You think he has something to do with Lillian?”
“No, but it was worth a shot.”
We finished our coffee in silence. I surveyed the office and felt bad for the sick assistant. The office would only get worse with every day he missed.
“I’ll get those videotapes for you. I don’t think Lillian has a VCR. At least I didn’t set one up for her.
